Re: Have you ladies been reading about what is happening in FL?
can they not see the forest through the trees?
all I see from this is grade inflation. Who grades the tests in FL? I'm assuming like NY it's the teachers! i know I would be padding grades whether it was my students or a student from Buffalo, just to protest this lunacy.
What about subjects with no tests? PE, art, music, library - do they mention anything about them?

Re: Have you ladies been reading about what is happening in FL?
They are looking at doing this here in NC, too.
If it happens, that's it...I am out.
It is absolutely DISGUSTING the way teachers are treated here (and down South in general, so I've heard). EVERYTHING is based on numbers. I was transferred out of my last school because my students' scores "weren't up to par". 2/3 of my class passed the necessary tests, but that wasn't good enough.
It was also my first year in the state, first year teaching 5th grade...but I was not good enough.
It's sickening.

So much union bashing these days- your post reminded me of something I read in the WSJ-someone pointed out that the lowest ranked US states for education do not have unions. I thought that was interesting. They are all in the South.
FWIW, it is looking like Crist might veto this bill. Let's cross our fingers- I can see something like this happening all across the country.

Interesting data...but I'm surprised it was in the WSJ - Rupert Murdoch must have missed that one getting through.

Exactly. I had no idea when I came here to teach that there are no unions. The "union" we do have is pay-as-you-go, but you get absolutely nothing for it.
It's the reason that this year was the 2nd year in a row that they froze our pay--none of us got our "step up". Pretty ridiculous when you make less than 40 grand with a masters and 6 years experience.
It's one of the few reasons I'm looking at leaving in the next few years. We want to come back to "civilization".

For the state test, FCAT the tests are sent out to a company to grade - teachers are not allowed to look at the test (before, during or after) the only FCATs we were allowed to look at were from previous years. It is a big NO - NO to look at a FCAT with big consequences if caught.

Re: Have you ladies been reading about what is happening in FL?
scantrons sent out, written parts are read by random teachers/admins hired by district for grading - teachers never get to grade or check their own work...they use rubrics for every writing piece and standard pieces for each level to compare for the grades
