SD moving in...

My 12 year old step daughter moved in with us this past weekend. Her mother decided to move out of state and after having long talks with DH she agreed to allow SD to move in with us for 1 year - she will attend 8th grade here and after the school year is over SD will decide if she wants to stay or go with her mother. The point being that where she starts high school she must stay.

We are blessed and grateful that she is allowing this.

I am excited because I love her so much but scared to have a teenager (she will be 13 this summer)

I want to be involved as much as possible when it comes to school - how do I prepare, what should I know, where are the resources?

Any information regarding Woodland Middle School?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Yeah you!

I don't have any info on that school but if she's new to the district, I'd try to find out what camps are in the area for that age group or some activities in the area (libraries are great resources).

When DH moved to LI, he moved before the school year ended so he had some friends for the summer & by September was all set.

Thank you so much - will look into that :)

Re: SD moving in...

Call the guidance counselor before school ends for the year and tell her your concerns and ask for advice about making the transition easier.

In terms of summer programs, look for district sponsored activities, booster club camps, and library teen advisory groups.

Re: SD moving in...

I went to woodland ( in east meadow) they used to have swim teams and diving teams at prospect park in the summer....though some of the kids that used to hang out at the park ( i was one of them ) could be shady the swim and dive teams were great and the kids seemed to love them. I know once she gets into woodland there are alot of clubs etc she could join. Maybe look into places like big chief etc to see if she could be some kind of junior camp helper? they also I believe have summer sports at that age through the town.
