My dog is too skinny

Our toy poodle mix really doesn't really eat alot. We feed him EVO (we were told this is one of the best). I give him 1/2 a cup a day, sometimes more. It seems he never finishes it all. I have added boiled chicken breast to put some weight on the little guy but he will eat the chicken & then very little EVO.
My trainer pointed out that he is skinny. She gave me a recipe for "fat balls" & said they should put some weight on him.

I feel like a horrible Mommy having an underweight dog.

In addition to his crap appetite I take him jogging 4-5 miles about 4x a week. He loves jogging but I'm afraid he's not making up the calories he's burning!!

Try a different dog food. We have our Pug on Innova which is another great brand of dog food. Maybe the pieces are to big to chew?

Re: My dog is too skinny

Something I've learned with my dog who was on one of the better quality foods is that every dog is different. What might be great for one dog might not be as effective for another dog. I would consider changing your premium food for a different premium food. When I did that, my dog started putting weight on and is now at a healthy weight. He was always a good eater, just for some reason the other food wasn't working for him. Good luck.

Re: My dog is too skinny

What does your vet say about his weight? I listen to people's opinions about my dogs but I don't take them for truth until I check it out myself or with my vet.

ITA with this. I have a cavalier king charles spaniel and when he was little younger everyone would tell me that he was too skinny. I always found it so annoying, especially when strangers would tell me! He wasn't the best eater, but was also a very active pup. He's probably filled out a little more, but he's still small for a male cav (though within the normal range for a cav--he's not considered underweight). When I took him to the vet, she was happy with his weight. She said his breed has a tendency to get heavy as they get older, so at least he has some room to fill out and won't be too big.

Re: My dog is too skinny

My vet suggested Blue Buffalo food. Its not cheap but she said it will help....my puppy wasn't gaining weight and it helped us. But before you do anything I'd ask the vet

Re: My dog is too skinny

I adopted a dog that I believe was too skinny and everyone said the same thing. He is on prescription food and we were told to feed him 1/2 a cup a day (.5 2x). But now we feed him 1/2 a cup two times a day instead and he looks so much better! It may be a lot of food, but he is old and it seems to have been doing good for him. So I say if he looks too skinny give him more.

I'm suprised that EVO hasn't put weight on. I was told that its very high in protein. I was afraid my lab would gain weight on it so I mix his EVO with Caniade. He picks the EVO pieces out and eats just those! He loves the EVO.

Maybe he's getting too much exercise? He is a little guy afterall and they dont require alot.

Re: My dog is too skinny

I am going to stop EVO. I think he just doesn't like the food. It's small bites & I have tried everything including softening it with warm water. It's not the consistency of the food. When I mix some ground beef in he will eat it. He doesn't like the food.

He is willing to starve himself for days because he doesn't want it. I was giving him Eukanuba & he was doing great but then I read it's not the best food. I am thinking that he does need a diet with grains though. This whole grain free idea seems good but he's not tolerating it.
