If you have to call your job to tell them you're sick and won't be in ...........
what is the protocol? and, does it feel awkward?
I have to call in and always feel like if I don't sound sick, they won't believe me- even if I really AM sick! Unfortunately at my job you can't call the night before and leave a message.. you must call the morning you'll be out and speak to a human voice
... I work in a school....

I would rather talk to my boss than to leave a message or text. My boss is up at 500 anyway so no matter when I call he answers.

My boss usually gets in after me, so I would call co-worker (who could care less if I'm sick or not!) or leave my boss a voicemail.

Re: If you have to call your job to tell them you're sick and won't be in ...........
I always feel so guilty calling in when I'm sick, I don't know why, but I could be on death's door and still feel guilty.
My last job I would leave a VM and it was great, this job the protocol changes based on my boss' mood.
Sometimes It's leave a VM, or keep calling until I speak with him. It's very bizarre.
I told him; when I'm sick I'm not going above and beyond to call out b/c I'll more than likey be passed out after the first call.

Re: If you have to call your job to tell them you're sick and won't be in ...........
we're pretty loose in my department- my staff can leave a message, send an email, text me or whatever.
I leave a message on my secretary's voicemail when I am going to be out sick.

Re: If you have to call your job to tell them you're sick and won't be in ...........
I hate calling sick. Mostly because they would have to call all my clients at the last minutes to tell them not to come.
So I have to be "contagious" to call in sick.
I have to call in.
DH has to call to someone live too. No email permitted.

I email. I know it's going straight to the blackberry.
I can work from home too so it's not a huge big deal.

Re: If you have to call your job to tell them you're sick and won't be in ...........
It's not awkward - I call and tell the receptionist at the front desk. If I have an appointment I need to cancel then I also ask to speak to my supervisor.
I usually tell them why I am not coming in - whether I am sick, one of my kids is sick, or I am "sick" They don't care, it's my business and no one else's how I use my time.

All we have to do is leave a message or email to let them know we are out sick... makes it a lot less stressful!

we have PTO days to use as we see fit. If I want a day off or if I am sick, I email my manager and let him know the morning of

Re: If you have to call your job to tell them you're sick and won't be in ...........
i feel bad, usually i talk to the main secretary so its not so bad then I email the crew.
to be honest its a major issue at my job everyone bangs out sick or takes off but in their defense they also work outside of normal hours and run themselves down. I sometimes get really annoyed with it but i don't work after hours so i have to remember that.

Re: If you have to call your job to tell them you're sick and won't be in ...........
We don't have to be sick to take a day off, which is why they are called occasional days here. I usually try to plan a day off in advance, but there have been occasions where I have called the day of. I time it where I can speak with my supervisor, rather than leaving him a message. If I have to, I can leave a message. Not a big deal.

Re: If you have to call your job to tell them you're sick and won't be in ...........
I hated the days of calling in at 6 am for schools.
We, now, call a phone service or can do it online. Then the computer system has our subs and will call them with options of accepting the job - all electronically.
