Re: Summer Fun
Tiki Entertainment (formerly Castle Golf) with go-Karts and mini golf in Centerreach is a fun one for my kids.
We also really like going to Jones Beach in the evening.
I looove fairs and festivals. My kids look forward to Sayville Summerfest, Bradstock and Seafood Festival.
I also like lazy days in Montauk or just going for a drive to pick up a Briermere pie.
I don't love Splish Splash - but the boys sure do!
They also like horseback riding.
This year we are going up to visit Howe Caverns.

Re: Summer Fun
I love it! I will add more later bc my 4 year old is dying to go on Nick Jr.com right now. I am looking for lots of things to keep them busy plus I will have friends visiting a couple times this summer so we want to have ideas.
ETA: I just want to quickly add that you should check your local library. I live in Massapequa and they have passes for a lot of places that you can borrow. I know they have cradle of aviation, childrens' museum etc., so I am sure other towns have it as well. We can reserve them on line.
And post here to see if anyone has passes or knows where to get passes. I have the 2010 entertainment book and there are lots of passes, some I know we wont get a chance to use and I will gladly pass them along.

Re: Summer Fun
I haven't been but I hear that Alley Pond just over the border in Queens is good.
My kids really like the Queens County Farm Museum, not far from Alley Pond. It's a quick one though, maybe 2 hours tops. I do that on days where we have something else in the afternoon but just want to get out for a bit. It's free.
Mini golf
ETA: If you are a member of the Bronx Zoo/Brooklyn Aquarium you can also get into the Queens Zoo, Central Park Zoo and Prospect Park Zoo with that membership.
I like Sands Point Preserve and Planting Fields Arboretum for walks.
My kids also really liked the Brookhaven Wildlife and Ecology Center which is free and really easy to get to.
Tickets to Ducks games are reasonable and I let them eat right before we go so they aren't that hungry and asking me for a million snacks there.
