Unemployment question

I'm just about done with my regular benefits of 20-some-odd weeks. I read about extended benefits on the NYS Unemployment website and was super confused but called and got a better understanding of it.

Right now, they're waiting for a new legislation to pass and then people like myself (who missed the cutoff date) will be able to receive extended benefits.

My question is, what happens if they don't pass this legislation? Am I sh!t out of luck? (I'm 7 months pregnant and no one will hire me in my current state... grrr.) Do I just re-file a claim for another 20-some-odd weeks? How are there people out there who milk this system for 99 weeks (not that I want to be one of these people, I'm just curious)???

Any info would be a huge help!!

TIA!!

Re: Unemployment question

I'm pretty sure you keep filing and when it passes, it will be retroactive.

I'm not sure about re-filing, I always understood it that you would be SOL...Chat Icon

Btw if you do get extended benefits you HAVE to look for work, apply places, etc, they are a little strict with itChat Icon

Re: Unemployment question

What is your original file date? (first day unemployed)

If they don't pass new legislation and you aren't already eligible for any other tiers, then yes, you are done collecting and that's that...sorry to say.

Unfortuantly not EVERYONE is eligible for the total 99 weeks. Some will only get 26, some may get 60 some got 99. The extensions are what gave people more time than others based on the "economy" (while I dont agree, some say that there has been job growth)

I have yet to be asked for any proof of my job search. While I do try to keep a log just in case, I have not been contacted by UE since my FIRST meeting when I was unemployed about 6 weeks

Re: Unemployment question

I was laid off in Dec.

And I've never been asked to show proof of my job search either.

I was unemployed in 07 and I was NEVER asked, never contacted or anything. This time I've been asked to show proof twice...

Funny I wonder if its a different county or something. I have been unemployed for 13 months now and no contact from UE since June 2009.

Either way, I do try to keep the log just in case!
