School Bday parties

How do they work when your child is invited but doesnt attend? I went to another childs party today with another childs gift as well bc dd couldnt attend the other childs party next week. The family looked shocked and said that i shouldnt have since shes not coming. How could I not? The point of the gift is for the childs bday not bc we are going or not. If it worked like that I would feel like gifts were given only bc your child enjoyed entertainment and food. any thoughts?

Re: School Bday parties

We still give a gift if it is a close friend. If it is just another kid in class and they got invited and we did not attend, I do not.

Depends upon the circumstances...

If it is one of the girls close friends then I still give a gift...

If it is just for a classmate who is inviting the whole class then I do not...

The only exception to the whole class rule is if said child attend my childs Bday party...

Same for us.

I do have an exception that came up recently though.. we RSVP'd yes but No started vomiting and had a big fever the morning of. So we had to cancel at the last minute. We already had the gift - so they still get it!

For my friends I would. For classmates I would not. Although my dd just recieved a gift from a classmate that couldn't make the party. I was kinda suprised. Only 1 out of the 5 that didn't come gave a gift anyway.

Yes to all 3 circumstances.

See, this issue actually is that dd is going away otherwise she became friends with this girl fast (remember they are only 3.5). So I felt kinda funny about not giving the gift so i went with my gut. So in the future if dd doesnt go, I shouldnt worry about the gift I guess.

Same for us. Close friends get gifts. If we RSVP "yes" and then cannot attend on the day of the party I send a gift.

I also agree. If we outright decline a class party we do not give a gift. and I've had classmates decline my kids parties and they've never received a gift either so I'd be shocked if someone from school decined and then gave a gift. I remember seeing this question on the reg parenting board awhile back and many people said they absolutely give a gift no matter what i was surprised bc no one I know does it that way. I have 3 kids, after awhile I'd go broke just buying gifts LOL But the same as Heather, with good friends, always a gift and there was one time my DD was sick the day of a classmate's party, I sent to gift in to school for him and would always do so under similar circumstances.

I don't think people think of it like this although I suppose if you want to analyze it, you could say is accurate in a way... it's not that cut & dried though. IMO it's overthinking it to say that bc I do believe it is about making the child feel special for their bday which is why the parents have a party to begin with. It's customary to bring a gift. Yet I don't think anyone - parents or the child - are thinking beyond that. At least I know I haven't as the host parent or the parent of an invitee.
