Worried

My poor beagle. Last Thursday I noticed that she was licking one of back paws. I didn't think much of it. We were just able to fence in our yard for her last weekend so last week was the first full week that she had a backyard and didn't have to go for walks. Saturday I noticed that she was OBSESSIVELY licking her paw. She has a tendency to be stubborn and obsessive and will not stop. I have tried everything I can think of. I checked her paw and I don't see anything except that its red and raw looking from her licking it. So i put one of the booties that I usually out on her when we would go for walks in the snow and she just keeps trying to pull it off. I also bought a bitter spray that is supposed to stop licking and she just kept right on licking it. I bought a soft E-collar and she is wearing that now and she just looks so miserable. I made an appointment for the vet this afternoon, but I am hoping its not anything serious...It's just so frustrating and I am so worried for her.

Re: Worried

She probably has allergies.
My dog did this and once I took him to the vet for meds he's been fine.

I'd have the vet check her out.. Could she have burned the pads of her feet on the hot pavement outside?

Try Musher's Secret, it's supposed to be great to protect their paws in extreme cold, hot pavement and rough terrain. I just bought some with these past few weeks of heat.

Re: Worried

Thanks everyone! I took her to the vet and they found something lodged on the underside of her paw really deep (I didn't even think to look under her foot as she was licking the tops)...we think she might have been licking the tops in between her toes because she couldn't reach the pain...she is still trying to lick in between her toes but I have a soft cone on her and other than the frustration with not being able to lick she seems relatively comfortable. I have some anti inflammatory/ pain meds they gave me and we will see what happens. Poor puppy...she just looks so pathetic.Chat Icon

Re: Worried

it might be allergies, keep the bootie on but make sure the paw is dry. If possible maybe put some cortizone on it so it can help with the itching
