Activities

What do you have your child in and when?
DD is starting kindergarten and takes dancing, I can't decide what days (after school, saturday)
I also can't decide if I should add other things.
What do your kids do?

Re: Activities

In K we kept it simple with one sport Soccer. You know your DD best. Will she be in full time K? Is this her first time attending a full day of school? You can always add activities.

Re: Activities

My son starts kindergarten in the fall. I don't have him signed up for anything yet. I will sign him up for soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring. I want him to have at least one sport going on.

He really wants to do karate. I figure I will see how things play out and see if we can fit that in somehow but maybe wait a few months into school. Eventually I'd love to start swimming back up because I would love to keep him going with that. I want to look into cub scouts because I know DH would love to do that with him. I really don't know what to expect with him starting full time school and how he will react and how exhausted he will be. I don't wat to overload him so I am waiting to see.

Re: Activities

DS is going into first grade. He does fall and spring soccer, spring baseball, and Karate year round (every Monday). He chose not to do basketball last winter, but has taken a liking to it and will probably want to this year.

It's a lot! He does well and he likes it all. I think I may have convinced him to drop soccer and stick with baseball since he loves that more.

The trouble I will run into now is that DD is old enough for soccer and wants to play. How can I let her play and not him? So it will be tough.

Re: Activities

My oldest is going into 3rd grade and he plays soccer. He also goes to a social skills group 1x a week and religion 1x a week. That takes up 4 afternoons/evenings. He did basketball in the soccer off season and he liked it so I might sign him up again.

My DD is going into 1st grade. She does soccer, gymnastics & Daisy Scouts.

My youngest is going into PreK and does gymnastics and will be starting soccer. He also gets speech therapy 3x a week.

Wow, they do more than I thought.... it's challenging bc it can overlap. Right now DS #2 is doing the speech & gymnastics during the day when my others are in school.

The only thing that is on the weekend is the soccer games.

What about Daisies? My DD's troop meets every other week and there are other activities as well but you can do or not do the others, depending on your schedule. She met a great bunch of girls she probably would not have known yet.

Where are you doing art classes?

I would also like her to do daisy scouts but it doesn't start until January.

She goes to Paint Me A Picture on Merrick Rd in Bellmore. Both kids are doing art camp 1x a week there, we're supposed to get the fall schedule this week. We've been going there for 2 years.

I've also heard good things about the South Shore Art Center in Bellmore by the train station. Their classes start with pre-k and go through adult.

Re: Activities

A friend of mine gave me some good advice a few years ago. She's a single mom with 2 kids and I asked her how she did it all. She said they each get 2 activities. If they want to do another activity, they have to give up one of the other two.

DS#1 does gymnastics all year. He did not like soccer, so we didn't push it (will he be the only kid that doesn't play?) but he has shown interest in lacrosse, so that might be his second this year.

DS#2 doesn't do anything, but I think he might do well in soccer. So we're signing him up for that.

Re: Activities

DD will be 4 and in Prek.

She will be in her 3rd year of dance (she is currently at dance camp 2 half-days this summer). She does gymnastics 1 day per week and will start Soccer in September 1 day per week.

DS is 3 and is in gymnastics 1 day per week and will be doing soccer in sept 1 day per week.

They have done soccer tots and lil sluggers in the past - this soccer will be with a town club.

This year she's taking dance, brownies, CCD during the week & swimming on the weekends.

How cute! One of our girls bridged over to Brownies in June, they look so much bigger than the Daisies. Did she have to get a full out uniform?

This is good advice. Seeing what they do typed out, I feel like my kids do a lot but they really don't. I mean, I can't consider speech therapy & religion or even social skills, which my son loves, as activities but they do take up time in their schedule. That's why I like for them to just have one steady activity on the weekends. So they have time to just play and see friends.

No - I'm the slacker mom when it comes to sewing those patches on.

Re: Activities

Over-programmed/over-scheduled is NOT good. Free playtime is very much lacking in a lot of kids, I have read so much about this. I agree kids need activities and need to be kept busy but don't overdo it it either. I try not to compare what my kids are doing to other kids in their classes because it stresses me out! I would sign them up for a max of 1-2 classes if they are in school full time.

My DD will be going into kindgergarten too and she'll be in dance (for the third year) on Saturdays and probably Daisies once a week after school.

I was hoping to do swim classes too, but with a new baby this fall, I just don't see that happening.
