Re: Question about being forced into a new position
For me it would depend on a lot of things. How much more commuting time? Could I negotiate a raise or some other benefit like work from home or a different work schedule if it would make commuting easier, etc?
In this economic climate, I don't want to be perceived as anything but a hard working team player. I wouldn't "threaten" them by saying you won't stay in this new position if they make you transfer. So I would probably make the switch (as long as the commute is not insane) and keep an eye out for internal positions I could apply to and address it when the time comes.

Re: Question about being forced into a new position
Request a meeting.
Bring what you do currently that is beneficial to them IN WRITING, as well as other things you could do to help at the current location.
Don't threaten to go elsewhere, even within the company.
They may just be looking for a temporary solution over panic and if you show how you are needed where you are, they may look for another solution.
My job has tried to pull this with me a few times so I feel your frustration.
In my case, they wanted me to take cases in the Bronx when I live in Suffolk.

Re: Question about being forced into a new position
so they are reassigning the work because she is not working out?
So they don't want to let her go and replace her?
Nope, wouldn't do it. I would start looking for another job. They are clearly taking advantage of you.
I wouldn't want to work for a firm that does this.

Re: Question about being forced into a new position
What makes them think she will do better at your job?
You are not thrilled. It's obvious. But I also feel you do not like the position she has. It is the Managers or the job she does?
