Another Q on the All-Star game

this question gets tossed about every year. Anyone else feel that by letting the fans vote in the players, that the game is misrepresented.

In the Mets case, Cliff Floyd, who has been our best hitter, gets ignored, yet Piazza and Beltran, two guys who haven't produced that much (particularly Piazza) get starting slots.

Doesn't make sense to me. There should be a better system in place.

Re: Another Q on the All-Star game

The system is getting better. We had more 1st time players this year in the AS game than the past decade I think.

The fans know who's good and who isn't. Hell... if Brian Roberts can be voted to start... anybody can.

Plus... there are a LOT of big names that aren't playing this year. Johnson, Delgado, Clement, Matsui, hell maybe even Jeter.

Re: Another Q on the All-Star game

I don't like the fans voting at all. And it's mostly because of the all star game counting that I don't like it. As a Yankee fan and therefore an AL fan, why would I vote for the best NL players? I don't want the NL to win. Now you can argue well you should want to put the best team out there to compete but I just don't think fans think that way.

Lo Duca and Hernandez have better numbers. I don't see them play that often but given the fact that Piazza is not known for his defense I have to think they are better there as well. I know Hernandez is injured now so he couldn't play anyway but I don't think he would have won anyway. It's like how Ripkin kept getting the start even though he was pretty bad in his last couple of seasons. It's popularity not numbers that the fans vote on. Remember a couple of years ago when Nomar was in the lead even though he hadn't played a game all season?

Lo Duca and Hernandez have better numbers.

You think?

OPS:
LoDuca - .738
Piazza - .735

HRs:
Piazza - 9
LoDuca - 2

BBs:
LoDuca - 21
Piazza - 20

Slugging:
Piazza - .423
LoDuca - .390

RBIs:
Piazza - 34
LoDuca - 33

The only thing that LoDuca sigificantly leads Piazza in is hits... where LoDuca has 11 more hits than Piazza.

But Piazza has a big lead in HRs. LoDuca is playing to his normal averages... however Piazza is underacheving this year. Piazza's numbers will improve even more (especially the hits and BA).

So when you say "who puts up the better numbers"... sorry its Piazza.

Re: Another Q on the All-Star game

You can even compare Piazza vs. Hernandez.

Hernandez is injured... but he has 236 ABs already. Piazza has 265 ABs... so thats close enough to compare.

OPS:
Hernanzez - .738
Piazza - .735

HRs:
Piazza - 9
Hernandez - 7

Hits:
Piazza - 67
Hernandez - 66

RBIs:
Piazza - 34
Hernandez - 33

BBs:
Piazza - 22
Hernandez - 11

2Bs
Piazza - 18
Hernandez - 12

Your team is down by a run in the bottom of the 9th. Man on 1st. Two outs. Who do you want batting? Piazza? or Hernandez?

Re: Another Q on the All-Star game

You neglected to mention 3 catergories that I feel are important when looking at numbers:

SO:
Piazza 43
Lo Duca 18
Hernandez 26

OBP:
Piazza: .313
Lo Duca: .348
Hernandez: .310

Average:
Piazza: .253
Lo Duca: .295
Hernandez: .280

I really think that if you're comparing numbers you have to look at these also. Also I don't think that the all star game should be solely based on offense. Piazza is not a good defensive catcher and given the fact that the other 2 are so close in numbers, why not have one of them start?

I addressed two of the three categories. The averages and OBP is based on hits and walks which i already talked about.

Yeah Piazza is K'ing more which is very unlike him.

And as far as the other catchers starting... not happening. Remember the starter is voted by the fans... so its obvious to me at least that the majority of the fans out there agree with me. Chat Icon

And if you think the All-Star game should be based on defense... even the SLIGHTEST bit... then maybe Brad Ausmus should be starting catcher since he is probably the best defensive catcher out there. Chat Icon

Re: Another Q on the All-Star game

Yeah but your numbers make it look like Piazza's numbers would be higher in average and OBP, but that's not the case. I'm saying let's look at all the numbers.

And I'm not saying it should be based on defense alone, I'm saying defense should be looked at also. If you have 2 players with close numbers offensively and one is better defensively then I think that player should get the vote. Ausmus doesn't come close in numbers so I don't think he should have won.

Yes the majority of fans agree with you. You asked who has better numbers and I put up 2 people who I thought did. If not better numbers they are at least close.

Errors:
Piazza - 2 .996 FPCT
LoDuca - 4 .992 FPCT
Hernandez - 5 .989 FPCT

And before you even mention the CS ratings... remember that throwing a runner out is a COMBINATION of not only the catcher's arm... but its the pitchers ability to hold a runner... the pitcher's ability to get rid of the ball quickly to the plate... the actual speed of the runner who is stealing... the basestealking SKILL of the runner who is stealing... the FPCT's of the 2b or ss who is making the tag... and the count and how many outs there are when the person is stealing.

In other words... its not just the catcher's fault for a SB. Chat Icon

Plus.. piazza calls a GREAT game and is excellent at blocking the plate. His defense is actually a little underrated. He just has a below-average arm.

HEY! I am just saying if we had a pitcher's staff full of Andy Pettitte's.... then maybe our CS numbers would look a hell of a lot better.

Re: Another Q on the All-Star game

Yes the pitcher is partly responsible for SB, but do you really think that's been Piazza's problem all of these years? He's just always caught pitchers who aren't Andy?

And your owned comment, totally unnecessary. You really just make me not even want to discuss baseball with you.

Re: Another Q on the All-Star game

LOL! The owned comment was a joke obviously.

Don't get all upset because I present my points well... and i back them up with fact.

Its obvious that Piazza has a horrid arm and people have ran on him for years. But as far as being a defensive catcher... he does do other parts of "defense" quite adequately which needed to be pointed out.
