Biopsy question
Longtime poster, big time fan...yadda, yadda...
I'm meeting with a breast surgeon next week & likely they will be scheduling me for a breast biopsy for abnormal results on two follow-up mammos.
My question is:
Can I drive myself home from a biopsy?
I don't want my parents to know anything until everything comes back fine. I'm sure my husband would take the day off or half of a day off but I want to be alone.
I undestand they give Xanax? I'm willing to forgo any kind of medication if they let me go home alone.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

Re: Biopsy question
i'm not sure if they'll let you go alone, but usually they will tell you if you're going to need someone to come with you to drive you home.
totally understand you wanting to go by yourself though!
for good results!

Re: Biopsy question
i had a needle core biopsy done last year. i found a lump, went to my gyn, then a sonogram and then biopsy.
the radiologist did not say that i needed someone to take me but a friend drove me for moral support and to keep me distracted. i was so happy she was there, they had given my several shots of local anesthesia in my breast & took 4-5 core samples. i was very sore and felt the numbness going down my arm on the way home.
some suggestions - wear a tank or sports bra so its easy to stick the icepack in as you leave. have some extra strength tylenol on hand to help with the soreness. have an icepack at home as well, i really liked the peas type. i was sore & bruised for a couple of days following.
my results came back benign & i was diagnosed w. fibroadenoma, a fibro-cystic breast tumor. i still opted to have surgery & have it removed due to location and size, it was 2.5 cm.

Re: Biopsy question
depends what kind of biopsy
if its stereotactic or core you should be able to drive home
if its excisional you will be put out so you need someone with you

Re: Biopsy question
Thank you for answering & for your suggestions.
Do they know what type of biopsy they are doing before I go in?
Do you think they'd let me go home in a cab?
stereotactic, core or excisional - does this have any reflection on the outcome? I mean I know if it's cancer, it's cancer but would the type of biopsy be an indicator that it could be more serious?
Sorry I have so many questions. I'm trying to figure this out without involving anyone I know in real life.

Re: Biopsy question
call them- they will know what kind of biopsy you are getting
If this is your first biopsy its most likely a needle core or stereo
I've had 2 this past month and am having an excisional next month bc of cells that were found during the stereotactic

I went through exactly the same scenario, but I did not have it removed. I also didn't tell anyone but dh, and asked him to be there with me for support and i'm glad I did, I was upset afterward (not from pain, just overall upset). I wouldn't have wanted to drive. But they never said you can't drive.

Re: Biopsy question
it might depend, but i think they are more concerned with driving, so if they called car service for you, i would think thats ok.
my mom has done that in the past..

Re: Biopsy question
I was living in the city at the time so driving wasnt an option, but I could have driven myself home afterwards if I needed to. I was alone and didnt need any sort of anti-anxiety meds.
