Re: It's time to have a chat with HR
Good for you !
I was thinking about you - this weekend I received a newsletter in the mail about avoiding eye strain at the computer, and it recommends using blinds to block direct sunlight and to eliminate excess glare. We have the kind of shades that you can see thru but it blocks the glare and also the heat.
It's not right for you to suffer pain and discomfort so that your co-worker can sunbathe while at work.

Re: It's time to have a chat with HR
I got some good advice. It's clear that she feels threatened by me and it's a power struggle. I knew that and it's insane how she is behaving.
I will address the shade issue as this is a physical issue and if we can't compromise by leaving the shades down by 1/3 then we may have to address this another way. If it doesn't resolve I will tell her that I will get a doctor's note and document it with HR.
...and leave it like that.

Re: It's time to have a chat with HR
Any update?
((I'm having similar issues with a co-worker that got so far beyond past that point because I didn't handle it earlier with upper management so I can really relate to your story and happy to hear you're reporting it))

Re: It's time to have a chat with HR
Didn't talk to her yet. I left yesterday with a migraine. I left work early and they sent me home in a car.
I couldn't even sit up in the car my head hurt so much.
I have the backing of HR. They told me what to say and how to say it and what the next steps may be.
It helps to bring it up in a mature way.

Re: It's time to have a chat with HR
Had the chat when she decided to put the shades up when I walked away.
It's 80 degrees in here too with people trying to adjust the ac.
I put them right back down and she said "i just put them up". I said I know I need them down. It hurts my eyes. She said she doesn't want to fight over this and there has to be a compromise. So her compromise is that half the day they are up and half the day they are down. Nope, my eyes can't hurt half the day or even for one hour.
I offered her my workstation instead and she said well the sun would be on you all day..it's worse on my side. But I want the sun on my desk..otherwise it's too dark.
I told her to get a lamp...she replied with no I want the sun. I told her to have her desk on the beach.
I explained that I look directly into the sun when I'm on my PC looking at my monitor. It faces this window. I explained I can't look directly into the sun 10 hours a day. She said it's not all day just a few hours.
listen b!tch, I'm not ruining my eyes because you want it to be the beach.
I didn't say that, but I really wanted to.
I let HR know of the exchange.
eta: she said she checked my desk and there is no glare. She said it's such a nice view we should have the shades up. Yeah, I like the view too but not to be hit with the sun in my eyes all day. It's not fair because you want the sun. I kept claiming it was a physical issue. when I look at the sun for a prolonged time and then look at my monitor I get that balck spotting that you get when you have a flash go off.
Her last words were well I guess I don't know how sensitive your eyes are.
Nope, you don't. Finally, I've walked away from my desk twice and each time the shades have been going up incremementally, by inches.
When she walks away I will bring them down again.
Tomorrow when my HR person comes back, I will put a formal complaint in and get a doctors note.

Re: It's time to have a chat with HR
I'm so sorry you have to put up with this crap.
It never ceases to amaze me the stories I continue to hear about incompetent employees that are allowed to drag out for weeks and weeks making everyone elses life at work miserable, when there are so many COMPETENT workers who cannot find a job.
Then they get to go collect unemployment when they finally are let go. Lovely.

Re: It's time to have a chat with HR
SO ridiculous! I'm really angry for you She is being very inconsiderate and unreasonable. you made reasonable suggestions for a solution and she seems to want it all her way. not right at all. good luck w/ HR. I hope something can be done.
someone may have asked this already, but have you spoken to your manager about the situation? it's childish, but it's impacting your health and productivity.

This is something two adults should be able to work out. She is clearly wanting it her way.
I try not to bring stuff like this to my boss' attention. She has way bigger things going on.
I will handle it the way HR instructed me to. If the compromise that I put forth doesn't stick then I will tell her that I didn't want to go this route but I will get a doctor's note and document it with HR.
She thinks a compromise is that I should have the sun in my eyes only part of the day instead of the whole day. Utterly stupid like she is.

Re: It's time to have a chat with HR
I will get the doctor's note tomorrow. If this behavior happens again I will show it to her.
If it continues after that I will tell her it's going to HR for the "record".
Don't mistake my good nature for stupidity....I will be the biggest b!tch she has ever seen.
