Went in to set up my classroom and.....
I have 30 second graders so far on my roaster. That is just insane.....and then they expect us to differentiate instruction for 30 seven year olds......It really is terrible.

Re: Went in to set up my classroom and.....
yup!!!
and it is out fault when students do not do well... but when you have 30+ (because now i heard they raised it to max 32 in a class for at least 1st and 2nd grade) kids and half of them are ESL it makes it hard to differentiate for all. But it seems like only us teachers see this as a problem.
I teach CTT and class size is now ok to be : 15 gen ed and 12 Spec. Ed. I understand there are 2 teachers - but 12 special ed??? and my gen ed arent much higher than my SE students.

Re: Went in to set up my classroom and.....
I am waiting (dreading) to see how many 7th graders I will have. During "good" times I have had 36-38 so I am a little worried. And instead of putting the struggling kids together (which has always worked for me) they will be spread among 3 different classes.

Re: Went in to set up my classroom and.....
I have THREE AP classes this year (which is a whole OTHER story ), but I just saw my rosters, and in addition to the 26 tenth graders I have, I'm going to have 26, 27, and 28 in my AP classes... if I survive this paper load, it's going to be a miracle. (And let's also not forget the 23 I have in Journalism...) And they said there were FEWER kids taking AP this year. Could have fooled me.

Re: Went in to set up my classroom and.....
I'm a lurking mom and my 2nd grader is in a NYC G&T (magnet class). The max went from 28 to 32 and I was told that this group does better (and so does the teacher) in a larger classroom compared to gen ed as far as their instruction levels (someone from DOE tried to convince me that the levels are closer together). Is it true? My kindergartner, also in the G&T has 27!

Wow....I have 24 4th graders and so far I have never had over 25. My principal does everything she can to make sure our class size stays low.
Hang in there

Twenty seven kids in K? I am used to middle school but that sounds like a lot. I would imagine in G&T that there would be little variation among levels- but I don't know if I buy what you're being told. I'd think that one benefit of a G&T class would be smaller size because that would be better for the kids. A 2nd grade with 32 kids is a lot.

Re: Went in to set up my classroom and.....
I had 29 first graders last year and it was a nightmare with that many kids and no extra support. This year they added an extra first grade teacher so we are at 24 students right now, but 4th grade has 32 students per class!!

Re: Went in to set up my classroom and.....
I don't know how you elementary teachers do it! That is ALOT of kids for an elementary class. I teach HS and always have 34 in my classes (including AP classes) but I think it's so much worse to have that many little ones in one class!

I dont think kids ever benefit with that many kids in a classroom ( 25 okay but 32? no way) the classrooms arent even large enough to be able to move around the room comfortably with that many kids
I work in NYC and last year we moved into a brand new wing with everything brand new. they gave us these beautiful tables that sit 4. they gave us enough for 24 kids yet everyone has close to 30. so now teachers have random tables stuck places its ridiculous
