Oprah
Anyone else watching right now? Thoughts??
Me, personally, wow how single sided can you get. Randi was on for all of 30 seconds. No debate, we are the problem. Kind of disgusted!

Re: Oprah
I totally agree!
All they talked about were how charter schools were the solution and bad teachers were the problem. Although they did throw in how there are some good teachers....gee thanks! They never talked about what charter schools are doing differently than regular public schoools.
I love how these people who know nothing about education know how to fix the problem.
One school talked about how each teacher gets a cell phone and students can call them until 10:30 at night for HW help. I think that is a bit redicuolous......what about parents!?!?
And the chancellor of DC saying that a teacher should not have a chance to improve on a bad observation b/c they are an adult!

I agree with you completely. The show's main focus was bad teachers and good charter schools. They left out so much that REALLY goes on. I wish I could be on the show!

Re: Oprah
OMG I am fuming! This show continues to feed the public's ignorance that all that is wrong with a public school lies in a teachers hands. No talk of how what you want to teach is inconsequential in the testing grades and a prep for the test curriculum is shoved down your throats. No mention of how so many children come to school hungry, how I provide their supplies and how when I ask that they go home and read they have no literature in their house! No mention of the political, corporate agenda that treats a student as a business deal rather then a kid!
Oh and God Forbid anyone suggest a parent take an active role in their child's education!!!

Re: Oprah
Oh and no mention of how charter schools make parents sign a contract stating their child will be in attendance, on time, in uniform and do their work or face expulsion.

Re: Oprah
I now hate her and will not view her show.
I can not take the attacks on our profession anymore. If it is so damn easy and lucrative, why aren't more people lined up to do it. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Re: Oprah
Oprah has consumed some charter school kool-aid. You'd think, after the James Frey debacle, that she'd do some real, honest research into the reality of charter schools.

Re: Oprah
Oprah has annoyed me for years.
YES she has done a lot of good and she donates tons to charity etc.
But people listen to her as if she is the word of god,,and with this power I think she should show both sides of an argument and she often does not.

Re: Oprah
I totally agree with everything you are all saying.
I am so sick and tired of everyone (family, friends, media) constantly putting down teachers. We work our butts off to try to teach kids our subject matter as well as to become better citizens only to have them hear everyone bash us and say it is our fault that they fail or are not perfect. Guess what - I"m not your mom!!!!!!!! Parents need to take responsibility and not think that teachers will babysit their kids. I have to say that I often luck out and have wonderfully amazing parents that really want to work with me,(I do work in a private catholic school but our population is changing and we are becoming very diverse and more similar to the local public schools) but all it takes is that one! Not to mention that teachers have no choice in what they teach and how they teach. The various DOE's and districts across the country rarely hire people that are qualified or even educators to make decisions regarding what goes on in schools. Just look at our chancellor. Oh and not to mention that I have to deal with 40 hormonal teenagers with all of their own issues and needs at one time multiplied by 6 times a day.
And don't get me started on charter schools. No doubt some of them are great but what happens when all this ferderal money that was handed out this year is not there next year - where will their kids go? I guess back to us crappy teachers!!!
Sorry- I just can't deal with teacher bashing on all levels of education.
Rant Over.

Re: Oprah
Oprah is a jerk!!!!
All they do is blame blame blame the teachers. Did they ever think that the reason why this kids are failing in school is bc the majority of them have no family structure/support?
When we were growing up, my parents made it a point to make sure all my schoolwork was done. These days, unfortunately, family life has changed and parents have other priorities (not all, but many) and don't think to check on their kids on a daily basis....this is why these kids are a total mess!!!
But leave it to Oprah and everyone else to blame the teachers! She should get off her high horse and walk into a classroom and see how she succeeds at teaching these kids.

Two multi-millionaires on a set who think that some how, their money gives them the right to judge things they know nothing about. Have them walk in my shoes, earning my salary with no one yelling my name in worship when I step foot out the door. No time to pee no less eat, constantly worrying about the kids who come in sick, hurt, hungry, no self esteem, feeling unloved, failing (due to the system and/or lack of parental involvement) and the feeling of guilt that I am not doing enough. I am tired of the blame game. I know that there are teachers out there that are not doing the job right or for the right reasons but I know waaay more good then bad. I love my job I truely do. I am doing everything I ever wanted to do and knew about the problems and struggles coming into it (especially growing up in a rough area in the city) I cannot, however get used to politicians and celebrities with no educational background to speak of judging what I do and how I do it. Can you tell I am still pi$$es about it
