What is the going rate for tutors?

DH is a teacher for 14 yrs and a tutor. he was working for a company for 6 yrs and they literally backstabbed him so he has decided to put out private tutoring flyers- what is the going rate? We have put up flyers in local supermarkets and libraries, any other places to try to put them up? TIA!Chat Icon also, has anyone else done this privately from ads like he put up and got students from them?

Re: What is the going rate for tutors?

I tutor the SAT privately. I charge $60, up from $50 last year. I found that if I charge more than that, parents are a little more wary.

I also offer "group rates." If I have two students I charge them $50 an hour and for three students $40. It works out in the end--I do the same amount of work for more money, ultimately!

I am a teacher so most of my students are from my school and my MIL works in the guidance office at a local catholic school, so I get those students as well.

GL!

I think that is insane TBH!!! I had a math tutor in HS and he charged $40 an hour. Obviously that was 10 years ago but to try and take advantage of people who's kids need help academically is disgusting IMO. I think to charge anything above $50 for school level tutoring is ridiculous.

Honestly, this is the going rate in my district, and $100 is considered VERY affordable for these parents. I was told by some colleagues not to charge less than this (if I didn't want to charge more, which I didn't) because then the parents wouldn't take me seriously as someone who's equipped to tutor. It all depends on where you are.

I charged $60 for high school students 10 years ago in a middle of the road district. SAT tutors generally charge more than that.

I am guessing you are in a richer district like Garden City or Jericho. It still boggles my mind because teachers don't even make that an hour in their regular pay...my god some doctors aren't even bringing home $100 bucks an hour. And I bet a good portion of them are not claiming this as income on their taxes.

I understand this is where you teach and this is what people pay. But I think charging $100/hr. does not = good tutor.

but tutors are doing one-on-one work, not 20:1, so I guess that could be a reason?

I have to agree that I think the parents want to pay for this.

EXACTLY. When you tutor, you are working 1 on 1. I used to feel very guilty about charging what I do but I don't anymore. It takes me almost an hour to plan my lessons for tutoring (between finding out what they're doing in class and researching/preparing materials) and I always stay over an hour with the kids. So at the end of the day, I spend almost 2 and a half hours doing what I need to complete the 1 hour of tutoring services.

I work in an affluent area, the parents can and do pay well over $75 an hour for tutoring without blinking. When I had a parent that lost his job, he paid $40 (their decision on $$) so I AM willing to work with people.

This was very nice of you Chat Icon and this was kind of my point.

Unfortunately there are people who live in less afluent areas or even middle class areas who simply couldnt afford $100 per tutoring session, especially if it were more than one day a week. So should it be held against the child?? KWIM?

ETA: I know a ton of preparation and time goes into tutoring especially if the teacher really cares. And I am not saying that they don't deserve to be paid for their services, especially if they are helping the child.

I guess I just get frustrated because I feel that the cost of things, especially when it comes to things related to kids such as daycare, is so out of control on Long Island. Not everyone can go outside and shake the money tree.

I think anyone who isn't willing to accommodate the district in which s/he is working and work with the parents there to find an affordable rate is a bad tutor. But I also think that tutors need to charge the going rate in the areas in which they tutor. Like I said before, in order to be taken seriously where I work, I need to charge a "competitive" rate... even though I know I'm probably among the cheapest because I do feel bad charging an exorbitant amount of money. (I also haven't raised my rates in four years.)

Re: What is the going rate for tutors?

Depends on where you live and the subject. I know people that make 60-70 in central Suffolk tutoring math, while another friend makes 90-100 on SAT tutoring in Jericho/Syosset. Two friends that tutor El ed make 40-50 an hour
