what do u do first? DMV or your Social Security card?

when I went to the dmv to change my last name they asked for the ss card to make sure it was legally changed.

I went to SS then to the DMV the same day...the DMV asked me if I changed it with SS and asked for the letter that I was given when I left SS

did dmv first then ss
dmv just needed to see my marriage license, same thing with ss. can't do anything without that thing!
