pet food
so in bringing our shepherd to obedience school, the trainer went off on this whole rant about how pet food made from "crude grain" and "crude protein" (i.e. ALL commercial foods) is basically poison made from the sick cow who dies of disease and can't be butchered for human consumption and is therefore doused in disinfectant at the "rendering plant;" that the grain is the moldy stuff, again, that can't be used for human consumption, doused in poison, yadda, yadda...
so he encouraged us to think outside the box with pet food, talked about a raw diet, one that's supplemented with our leftovers as well as whatever cheap veggies and carbs we can scrounge up plus vitamin supplements. right, so, complicated!
i guess my question is: has anyone heard anything like this? anyone not feeding their dogs commercial food? comments?

Re: pet food
My dog is on a high grade kibble diet supplemented with a homemade raw diet. It's a lot of work and expensive but I think it's worth it.

Re: pet food
You sound skeptical but he has good points. Search here or on Google for "The Truth About Dog Food". Then consider the recalls for salmonella and chemicals in pet foods that have killed pets.
True raw diets are not made up of leftovers and cheap vegetables. They're balanced, made up of the same quality food that you would choose for yourself, and supplements.
We are in the middle and chose a human-grade, grain-free, natural dog food called Evo Herring and Salmon. There total crap foods out there and ones that are better. It all depends on how much you care what you're feeding your pet and how much you want to spend.

I agree Trish. The food I make is bought specifically for the dog, all fresh ingredients mashed in a food processed, I follow a recipe, then it is frozen in individual containers that last for a couple of days once defrosted. It is actually a very complicated and time consuming task every other month. It is extremely balanced and healthy.

Re: pet food
so does this mean my dog's food is complete crap? nutro ultra
looks like it.
i grew up with dogs and my mom always fed them the cheap supermarket stuff. I've always fed joey this food and he is in excellent health (knock knock). Im sure there are always improvements to be made. Kudos to the poster who makes her own food- thats increduble admirable!!!!

not skeptical so much as shocked and disgusted, not to mention dismayed by the time commitment it looks like we'll have to take on in order to not feed our dog poison.
i've been doing a lot of reading about this over the past week or so, and there doesn't seem to be a consensus on what's safe/healthy. a lot of vets say raw meat is dangerous because of bacteria or that bacterial contamination can spread when we collect her droppings. it's a little intimidating to be in charge of providing balanced nutrition (proper proportions of protein, fat, carbs, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, etc.) when kibbles do the thinking for me.
we've been feeding her merrick before grain kibble. i'm thinking of switching to orijen and supplementing with a homemade concoction similar to what PP described. there's a book in the mail from amazon. we'll see.
it's all pretty overwhelming seeing as we're TTC and this kind of time commitment for the pup is inevitably going to become a stressor.
most of all, what our laws permit companies to sell as "food" behind glossy labels and advertisements is an abomination.

Re: pet food
alot matters on the dog and what they can take - some dogs have more sensitive stomachs
we had a pure bred golden last till 17 and half- he could eat anything and not get sick - he got supermarket food and when he lost his mom hw lived off mcdonalds for 2 months -he would only eat what my brother ate
he also ate a can of bag dog food -we only know because the other golden we had who was 10 years younger got very sick and we almost lost the younger one
but if you pay more for better food defiently research it because some of the main sream brands that are natural are not better- my dog got very sick off of a mainstream natural dog food
