So we adopted a shiba inu

& its not going well!!! We have had him for about 24 hours and its already changed the whole household & not in a good way. We where told he does not bite - WRONG!!! Not aggressive towards other dogs - WRONG!!

Shibas are know for being very dominant and aloof. All of that I can deal with. We get him in the car so far so good. I went to pet him & he snapped at me but I put it down to he was scared, didn't know us etc mind you I was petting him for about 30 mins before with no problem. We get home introduce Sandy to him. They where playing & all was well with the world. Had a good nite. He stayed downstairs on his bed. No accidents no crying. Let Teddie and Sandy outside & all is well. I am sitting on the couch and I go to move a little bit & he jumps as me. Didn't bite but more a warning. I told my DH to take him away from me. He loves my DH. Plays with him, lets him pet him, take things away from him but when is comes to Sandy and I no way. So now what do I do!! We where supposed to have an eval done on him but the person who was supposed to do it got sick. The owners had to give him up because they where moving & could not take him so he would have gone to a kill shelter so we decided to take him. I knew we where going to have issues with taking the dog but i will not tolerate biting of any sort. All advise welcome & thanks for reading.

Re: So we adopted a shiba inu

I am not sure where you adopted the dog from but hind site is 20/20...you probably should have put the dog with your dog before adopting the new dog, to be sure of the reaction.

Who did you adopt the dog from? A person or organization? Do you think the family LIED and they got rid of the dog b/c he bites???

What do you do now? UGH.Chat Icon

Re: So we adopted a shiba inu

We adopted him from his previous owners with a little help from the rescue group. They listed him as a courtesy for them. If he was an offical rescue he would have been checked into more. Its no ones else fault but my own. If it doesn't work it doesn't work. I have been in touch with the group & they have given me some great advice. DH & I will have a call with them tomorrow for a plan of action with him. He is doing much better this afternoon and so far tonight. I am standing my ground.

Re: So we adopted a shiba inu

I can't stress this enough - you MUST seek help from a qualified trainer that has experience with fear/aggression. You need to learn the signs of stress and fear, and not engage him when he's showing them. You need to know how to react when he does snap, in his language, not yours.

Dogs need to figure out the pack order, and that can take weeks. But you shouldn't have introduced them in your home, it creates an unstable environment for them from the get-go. I'm not saying this to point the finger at you, I'm concerned that he is being put in stressful situations and acting out as a result. Things that are normal to us can be very scary for them.

This dog needs strong, knowledgeable owners who make an effort to help him. You were aware of possible issues before you adopted him from the previous threads you posted and the responses we gave you. Please don't give up now. Many people go through this, get a qualified trainer, and are able to work through issues. His life was just turned upside down, he is going to need to acclimate, and learn how to be a stable member of your family. Chat Icon

Re: So we adopted a shiba inu

ITA with Greenfreak, get a good trainer and fast.

I have 2 shibas. One is the sweetest little guy ever, totally breaks all the shiba inu stereotypes. But the other is a PITA - if we hadn't trained her well as a puppy, she could've easily become aggressive. You give her an inch and she'll take a mile. She figured out really quickly what she can get away with and with whom. As a breed, they're known to be mischevious and extremely intelligent. You need to put a stop to the biting/mouthing behavior ASAP, and I'd definitely recommend professional assistance since he's trying to bite you too.

Re: So we adopted a shiba inu

Thanks for the info! We are finding out that is probably the case. He is def acting out to see what he can get away with. We have been in touch with a trainer (not in the area)who is trying to find us a trainer that will work with him. We need someone who knows how to handle him. Just for the record we where not given all the low down on him. He where told about him attacking feet but thats it. Also we have found out that he pretty much ruled at he past home & now we are trying to tell him what to do. Hopefully we will be able to correct this problem.

When I adopted my dog he had some issues and our trainer recommend an animal behavior consultant:
