another maternity question
Did anyone give birth in September? I'm due the end of September. I know my friend who had a baby this Sept came in for like a day or two and then started maternity. Do most schools allow this? Can they deny me from doing that?
Im a NYC teacher with tenure. Thanks!

My twins were born in September and I worked until the day before they were born.
But, just be aware that your summer pay is cut because of the time you take off. No one told me that!

Sorry to hijack the thread...but is your summer pay docked if you are kept on payroll? So if I was paid for all 8 weeks of maternity is my summer pay docked for that or only for the remaining 4 that I was not on payroll?

Yes, exactly. This summer your pay will be normal, but next summer you'll lose part of your pay. The reason being that summer pay really your 10 month salary portioned out over 12 months. So if you don't earn for a part of that 10 months then you can't collect the portion that was saved for you for the summer.
I hope that makes more sense.

are you sure about that? I only ask b/c two of my coworkers have used FMLA to nurse dying parents.
I just looked:

FMLA is Family medical leave act so you can use it to care for any sick family member.
In the city FMLA begins the first day that you go out. So if you go out two weeks before your baby is born you have to use sick days to get paid until baby is born, then you will get 6 - 8 weeks maternity leave, but you will have to return to work 10 weeks after your baby is born. So you only get a total of 12 weeks.

you are medically unable to go to work for 6 or 8 weeks after you deliver ( 6 for v birth 8 for c section). you should check with someone- i don't think they will let you go in to do that.

I have a bad feeling about this - but I'm beginning to freak out about the whole new year set up. I have two classrooms too. I guess Plan B would be to go in and set up in the middle of the summer.
ETA: a teacher last year had her baby Mem Day weekend and came back the last week - so less than 4 weeks. I'm pretty sure she had a c/s too. so maybe there is hope for my wish.
