Was it permanent vision loss or temporary with the help of drugs (steroids)?

Thank you! Chat Icon

Re: Multiple Sclerosis

She did recover some of her eyesight, though she does need to wear glasses as the vision in that eye is very weak.

She lives a very full, productive, happy life. She does get "flare ups", particularly in the summer as the heat really aggravates her symptoms, but for the most part she feels well most of the time.

She is now in her late 40s and she was diagnosed in her early 20s.

My Dad was diagnosed in Oct of 2008.

He had numbness in his fingers and lips.
It doesn't seem too progressive right now.
He takes Betaseron injections.

Re: Multiple Sclerosis

My co-worker was diagnosed about 2 years ago. She first noticed when she would get like a tingling/numbing sensation down her leg (kind of like the whole leg falling asleep) and then had a few episodes of incontinence.

She was diagnosed by her neurologist and went to a MS center in the city for a 2nd opinion.

She is still functioning well... not many limitations at all, but like a PP said, she gets some flare-ups but then goes back to baseline.

Re: Multiple Sclerosis

a family friend of ours was recently diagnosed..she is in her early 20's...away at college and during one of her visits home she went to the dr because her legs would go numb and she would trip often while at school.

she's going to be on medications but other than that i'm not sure what other types of therapy she will need. i think the earlier the diagnosis the better.

good luckChat Icon

Re: Multiple Sclerosis

My mom was diagnosed 19 years ago.

She was putting her underwear on and realized she couldn't feel the fabric moving one leg.

That was just the initial 'a ha!' moment.

She started getting tingly sensations in her legs, etc.

My mom has MS. If you have any questions feel free to FM me. Her diagnoses took a long time. She has an amazing Dr, tops in the field.

my sister in law has MS, she's been in remission for 5 years. She went to the doctor because she was having tingling sensations in her legs and arms and after few tests she was diagnosed with MS. She's the most amazing person I've ever met. If you need to talk to someone I can put her in touch with you.

Re: Multiple Sclerosis

I went numb from the waist down so I saw my GP, thinking it was a pinched nerve or something, and he sent me to the hospital because I could barely walk. I had a spinal MRI at the hospital and then had a brain MRI and spinal tap on an outpatient basis. It took 3 months from first symptoms to diagnosis, mostly because it took 2 months to get the spinal tap results back (I have no idea why).

Re: Multiple Sclerosis

My sister was diagnosed 2 years ago, just before her 30th birthday. He found out through a combination of MRI & Spinal Tap (not many Drs do the Spinal Tap anymore in NY; she was in rural MD at the time). Most days are completely normal for her, but she does have to administer her meds through a needle injection every 2 days. She is generally able to drive, work, etc.

She was having intermittent numbing, paralysis of her limbs, tingling and tunnel vision. She also began to suffer from headaches out of no where, and decided to see an Neurologist. He first suggested the MRI. When it revealed lesions, he then recommended the Spinal Tap for a definitive diagnosis. She has a lesion on her eye, causing the tunnel vision. Unfortunately after having symptoms for over 4 years, she will never regain her peripheral vision, and her general vision is declining greater than someone with traditional myopia. She has been on Betaseron, but she was having increasingly dilapidating episodes (4 in 2 years) that required her to have a semi-permanent port inserted into her arm for Prednisone injections (in MD you can inject them yourself with a script). When she moved back to NY, she sought another Dr, and found one that prescribed Rebif. She was doing incredibly well on it, until a recent episode (her 5th since diagnosis) that has left her walking with a cane. The episode was 6 weeks ago, and it is the first episode since her diagnosis that she has not recovered 100%.

She is now with a neuro that participates in the Touch/Tysabri program, which has gotten great success for some who had previously been told that their episodic recoveries would not regain to more than 60% or so of their previous function. Our neighbor also has MS, and she was on Tysabri for 3 months & was able to come out of her wheelchair.

The best advise is to ask as many questions as you possibly can to the Drs & nurses. Also, Stony Brook Hospital has a lecture series that they have on a regular basis. I believe it is free to attend. You can check their website for info.

Good luck! Chat Icon

ETA: I also wanted to offer that Tysabri is still a bit controversial. Please make sure no matter what your Dr recommends, MS or not, research & be your own advocate.Chat Icon

Can I ask if you were tested for Lyme? I have heard symptoms were similar.
