Hypothyroid: what were your symptoms: UPDATED with my symptoms..wdyt?
Im going to the dr. in two weeks for a physical.. .curious what yoru symptoms were?
My symptoms: (just wondering it this could be it)
1. can't lose weight to no matter how hard I work or how healthy i eat.. I fluctuate 5lbs then that's it.
2. EXHUASTED ALL THE TIME.. with 8 or more hours of sleep!!
3. always moody...I can cry at the drop of a hat.. I have NO Patience or tolerance for ANYTHING!!. PMSing 24/7 basically.
4. dry skin but nothing new there acutally.
5. joint and muscle pains and aches..that I just chalk up to the weight being too much for my body.
ETA: Had a case of Alopecia (patch of hair totally gone) a few years ago.

I had the all same symptoms you have but what tipped my doctor off was that I did not have AF for 2 months straight and was not pregnant and I was always regular, so sure enough when he did the blood test I had hypothyroidsm

Sorry to hijack- but how do they test for it? My dr did a blood test, b/c i had many of the symptoms and all i heard back was a call from the medical asst- "Your bloodwork is normal" Now what??

I had pretty much every symptom:
Depression
Constipation
Dry Skin
Exhaustion
Irritability
Trouble losing weight
etc and so on...

MD runs bloodwork which test TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels. Beware in 2005 the American Academy of Clinical Endocrinologists changed the guidelines for hypothyroid, but most labs have not. As a result many primary care MDs will see a TSH level within the lab reference range and say bloodwork is "normal" but you could still have an issue.

I took this quiz because I felt exhausted ALL the time. My results showed something like 87% chance of being hypothyroid. I got tested, got on medication, and feel a zillion times better.

I was just told this morning i have hypothyroidism with a level of 4.22 and am 11 weeks pregnant. I have been insanely exhausted and sluggish and constipated and moody and just have no motivation to do anything lately. They said in about 1-2 weeks after starting the meds, i should start to feel better but im worried when i this baby comes i will be stuck with the baby weight....i need to lose weight after this baby comes....i hate the way i look.

I think you definitely need to push them to test you-remember what I went through when I was pregnant?

Yes, those sound like hypothyroid symptoms.
My sister has it bad (her thyroid just basically doesn't work) and she had all the same symptoms. I only got tested because her doctor said it's genetic so my mother and I were tested and we both have it as well but mine isn't as bad.
If you DO have it, make sure you go on Synthroid of you can. Thyroid medication is one of the drugs with a sensitive therapeutic index so if the generic is just slightly off, it can really affect your dose.

moody biotch  i honestly cannot control it sometimes 
dry skin
swelling
over tired / lack of energy
also, linked to other autoimmunes... do you have any family history of autoimmune disease? where there is 1, there are usually many  100% true for my family tree. I can probably name 6 autoimmunes that exist in the last 2 generations of my family tree

Exhausted all of the time.. Could nap any time of the day
Biggest concern was my hair loss. I lost a quarter sized patch of hair on the back of my scalp.
Whenever my medication needs an adjustment, my first symptom is that hair loss in the same spot. I'll get that bald patch again.

Just added that I had a small spot on my scalp about 3 years ago.... well sounds like this could be it..
Ill be honest.. my BIGGEST FEAR..is that they'll say you are FINE!!

What Dancinbarefoot said is true...
My TSH levels came back at 4.6 which is just outside of "normal"...4.5 would have been within the normal range.
I had all the signs and symptoms of Hypothyroid but my GP said it was all OK...
I went to an endocrinologist and he did a sono of my thyroid. Sure enough I have Hashimoto's and essentially no thyroid..even though my levels were just out of the range...
So while your GP may be saying that your levels are normal they might not be normal to an endocrinologist. I would first ask to see the lab report. When I had my work up done some other things were a touch out of whack too...which should have queued my GP into what was going on..but she missed it. (Im no longer using that doctor)

The only other testing I've had done (besides bloodwork) was a sonogram of my thyroid. It didn't involve dye or anything like that at all. It was like a pregnancy sono.
