I might become a mommy today!!!
DH & I are going tonight to a local shelter to look at puppies! We are going to another one on Friday (if we don't take one tonight)
DH Vday gift to me is to get a puppy. He ALMOST bought a puppy from a store on Sunday   . Thank god he brought me and I told him NO FN WAY!! He had no clue and still believes what the crap the people there are telling us on how good the dogs are, sorry buddy, NOPE. He was about to pay $900!!!!!!! 
So nervous but so excited!!!

UPDATE:
So last night we became parents!!!!!!!
We rescued her from a local shelter. She's 10 months old, german sheppard mix. Sweet as can be.

How exciting!!! I have been wanting another dog, but DH says he has a 3 dog limit!!!

How exciting! Just remember to keep looking at the shelter if you don't see what you're looking for right away. In this economy, dogs are constantly being dumped at the shelter. It's like a full time job to find the perfect match for you in a shelter but totally worth it. Dogs that are rescued from a shelter know that you are their savior. Best of luck!

So exciting!!! I remember that feeling of possibility. Kudos to you for telling DH what's up with the pet store route. 
Yes, I totally agree that you should take your time and find the "right" one for your family. My #1 concern was energy which is cute at first but can be a problem down the line if you can't dedicate an hour a day on a walk. We saw lots of dogs before we chose the 2 we have, and personality comes into play too but energy is really where I'd start.
I'm looking forward to hearing about it! Which shelters are you going to? There's a lot of publicity surrounding the TOH shelter right now, might want to read up if that's one of the places you're going.

If you're considering Labs, there is absolutely one place you MUST look! Labs4Rescue!
If you don't find a new family member at the shelter, you really should look at that list. They pull Labs from shelters, train them, heal them if they're sick, foster them, and then adopt them out. It's an amazing organization and I can't say enough good things about them. It's where our second Lab came from (Ginger, our yellow).
