CPSE - parent training?

At DS's annual review the CPSE chairperson said that because he's in an 8:1:2 I should be receiving parent training at home. I never heard this before. She said that it's law that if DC is in a smaller setting u have to have parent training

Who gets parent training and why?

I'm asking because she hinted at something that makes me think that she thinks DS has autism and I'm just wondering if that's why she mentioned parent training or if any parent who has a kid in an 8:1:2 should receive it.

We were offered parent training and my DS is not currently in a program (although at our review meeting we decided to look for a placement) and he does not have autism.

I know where DS receives therapy services, there are a lot of parents that receive parent training and their DC's are not on the spectrum either.

we got parent training as part of the ABA program with EI. That stopped once we switched over to CPSE

Thanks for responding. She asked if I currently get parent training and I said no and then she said that by law parents who have kids in classes with small ratios have to have parent training.

I'm very sensitive, but I felt like she was implying that I wasn't doing my part. I told her I'd never been offered parent training and that I'd be happy to have it.

She also said that she "didn't know what to think" about my DS and asked if I'd considered further testing. I told her he'd had a psychological and he'd seen 2 different neurologists and none of them have gone ahead with a diagnosis.

I wasn't sure why she was recommending parent training - thank you for responding. I'm hoping it will be helpful.

We also got it when ABA started in EI. It was continued when DS transitioned to CPSE. I am not sure what the criteria is, but I know it was a big help to us, so we asked for it to be continued in CPSE.

Parent training can be given to any child that the school district/county feels is at risk for developmental delays. I think its great that they are offering it and that you took them up on it. Try not to associate it with any kind of dx, I've been on cases where parents recieved parent training b/c the child was hearing impaired or had cleft palate...There are a variety of reasons for providing parent training. HTH

I have been told by many people, including the child psychologist and dev. ped. DS saw that a neurologist is not the right person to diagnose Autism. They actually sometimes diagnose when it is not the case. What about getting a 2nd opinion from another child psychologist if you feel comfortable or for peace of mind?
