Autism: A little sad...

To see that yesterday was National Autism Awareness day and there were no posts on any of the boards about it. Yes, there was one post about lighting it up blue but that was started on the 28th. I would like to take the time to share my story and ask yours. Whether you have a child that is directly affected by autism, have a friend or family member that is or don't know much about it... Let's just discuss. Please answer the following and add anything else if you want...

1. Who do you know that is affected by Autism? My little brother, he is 5 and a half

2. What are the symptoms and triggers that child or person has? My brother is almost completely nonverbal, does repetitive behaviors like hand flapping and obsesses over light switches and anything electronic that he can turn on and off and take batteries out of... he is crazy about flashlights. Just one of his many triggers is babies w/pacifiers in their mouths, he hates this. Chat Icon

3. What is one of the things that this child/person loves? Flashlights and play dough.

4. Did you see any buildings lit up blue so far this month? Yes, I drove by Men on the Move (moving/storage company) on Oakwood in Huntington and the entire outside was uplit blue... It made my day! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just wanted to get the discussion going so that we can learn from each other, please add anything you like.

Re: Autism: A little sad...

Everyday is Autism Awareness Day in my world!

1. Who do you know that is affected by Autism? My beautiful daughter Aurelia, who will be 6 years old this June.

2. What are the symptoms and triggers that child or person has? Aurelia has a severe speech delay, low muscle tone (she can hardly run in fact), sensory and social issues. She tends to live in her own world about 95% of the time and it's very hard to bring her into reality. Stressful or tiring situations tend to trigger her spacing out. Normal things like birthday parties, school, being asked multiple questions, etc.

3. What is one of the things that this child/person loves? She has always loved books and figurines. First it was farm animal figures-now it's princess figures.

4. Did you see any buildings lit up blue so far this month? Just our front porch!

Re: Autism: A little sad...

Im glad you posted this. Because I am very upset that it is not or was not acknowledged. It is the leading disease, higher that childhood diatbetes, and childhood cancers. Not to say that those are not that importatant. For example, the white house. It lighted up pink for breast cancer, and red for HIV, but it couldnt light it up blue for autism.
It needs to be publicized more than it is.
I didnt see anything blue, except our house, and my son's school, who made the cutest shirts.

Re: Autism: A little sad...

Just because people did not post about it does not mean they don't live it and breath it everyday or don't care.

Although I post here openly about DS, I DO NOT "advertise" that DS is autism to complete strangers. Actually only 2 people know at my work and only a hands full of my very close clients.

So no we did not have a blue light. DS wore blue that day. That's the extent of autism day for us.

Should it have been advertised more by Gov. officials? Probably!

But with the same Gov. trying to cut EI and trying to force school districts to cut all special ed schools and bring all kids back into SD special Ed..... my hopes are not that high.

Based on some posts on other boards, it is clear that some people do not support spending tax dollars on our little ones. So I decided my energy will be spent on fighting for my kid with SD vs buying a blue light that nobody give a crapola about. IMHO.

Totally respect that, best wishes for your DS Chat Icon

I work with adults with Autism.

My house and my mom's house has blue lights up this month and I tried to encourage my friends and family to wear blue and send me pictures - so far only a handful did.

ETA: Even though not all people with Autism have an intellectual disability but thought I'd add here, another good movement is Spread the Word, End the Word (official day was last month) http://www.r-word.org/
