Smoking in School Parking Lot..wwyd?
I am curious to get other opinions on this...
When I drop my DD off to pre-school, there is one person always smoking right in the parking lot, although not on school grounds. We often have to walk right by to get to the school entrance. Today we were hit with a cloud of smoke, and DD watched as she threw her butt in a puddle.
OK, I used to smoke, and still occasionally have a cigarette. However, I find it totally inappropriate to be smoking SO close to the school. And it is every single day, before and after drop-off and pick-up. Never mind the littering (yes, a butt is litter IMO). Yesterday she was busy smoking, and her son was holding the gate open which another child ran out. The mother was too busy to notice.
What do you think? What would you do?

I would talk to the director about it and let them address it with the mom or send a letter to all parents. I am too big a weenie to approach her myself, especially with little kids around.

I agree that the director should be addressing it. It's not my place to tell someone that they can or can't smoke on public property. But it is directly affecting the school's business.
As for her son opening the gate & letting another child out, I would think it's the teacher's responsibility to make sure those gates are secure & no one gets out.

The child running out was after school was over. There is a small playground and they like to stay and play a bit. Parents are watching their own kids, for the most part.
I and another mom brought it up to the Director. I know she can't do anything about the smokiing in the parking lot as it is a public lot and not school property. However, she told me she was already planning on putting a reminder in the newsletter that smoking is prohibited ON school grounds. On our suggestions, she is going to include a request that people refrain from smoking near the school at drop-off and dismissal.
I don't think that is much to ask, do you???

Not at all. My guess is the mom is having a cigarette so she's not smoking in the car with her daughter. Meanwhile, the other parents are walking through her cloud of smoke with their child.
