x-post Dev. Pediatrician Recommendation

Also, I get the impression that there is a LONG wait to get in to these doctors. Should I just make appts. with all of them and see who gets to me first?

My ped's (and mine) concern is that while DS does not exhibit any other behaviors of being on the spectrum, he does seem to learn words and then loses them. He is receiving speech 2x/week. DS is 19 months and I am not too comfortable waiting months and months if there is something that I can do for him now. KWIM? TIAChat Icon

The waits are very long. We actually had one appt. in February, but DS had pneumonia when the date came, so we had to reschedule. Now we won't see anyone until June (!) In the meantime, I had him evaluated through the school district (he's over 3) and he has started services.

Have you contacted EI yet? Your child is young enough, in Nassau you go through the Dept. of Health and Human Services--not sure if it's the same in Suffolk. Also, you do not need a doctor's referral to request an evaluation. We went through EI, and I think that was even easier to arrange than the school district evaluation. Either way, they have to evaluate your child within a certain timeframe from the date that you report a problem. I would do this rather than wait for the doctor--you can still see the doctor afterwards.

I would make the appts. now. Make them with two different doctors if you can, both for another opinion, and also just in case DS gets sick, etc. You can always cancel one appt.

Good luck!

It is a long wait anywhere you go (We went to Boston to see ours)..

BUT. You can ask to get onto a cancellation list and if they have a last minute appointment available, they will call you.

But I agree with the pp. Call EI and get him evaluated through them while you wait for the dev. pedi appointment.

Lots of luck to you!Chat Icon
