Lost voice - need to entertain this weekend - tips?
I've been sick on & off, but now I have completely lost my voice. All I can do is whisper. This never happened before.
While my DH is enjoying it, I'm not! I have a bbq to throw and need to be able to chitchat
Any quick remedies that you know of? I keep reading online that you should not talk for a week, but I can't do that!

Re: Lost voice - need to entertain this weekend - tips?
I dealt with losing my voice a couple of months ago and it was extremely inconvenient since I have to talk for a living.
All I know is that I went to an ENT who told me that when you have lost your voice, whispering is just as bad as screaming. So he said to talk in a regular volume instead of trying to whisper....even though you won't hear much! Also, resting your voice is something he told me to do... which was interesting with a 3 and 1 1/2 year old in the house!
Hope it comes back soon!

Re: Lost voice - need to entertain this weekend - tips?
thank you guys!
it's so annoying! the other day it was kind of fun, because i sounded like a girl who worked a 1-900 number and I kept teasing DH, but then it completely went away.
It's so frustrating and my son doesn't understand why I can't talk and he is getting upset.
I wonder if it has to do with allergies.

So funny you're posting this. Woke up yesterday morning with no voice and a slight cough. It's awful, also have a weird headache so I'm leaning towards allergies.
It sux though. Nothing I've done so far has helped.

yeah, I def. have a wet cough and the feeling of having to clear my throat often. It's like post-nasal drip.

if you think you are drippy try an antihistamine.
Also, keep hydrated.

Definitely DO NOT whisper! It strains your vocal chords too much.
Warm liquids, gargle with warm salt water, keep your throat moist.
Also, definitely try a decongestant or antihistamine if you feel a post nasal drip.
I lose my voice ALOT and this is what the ENT tells me to do.
Feel better!

This has happened to me many times. Like PPs said, no whispering! Try tea with honey too.

Like some of the pp said, do NOT whisper- puts too much strain on the vocal chords.
Try a decongestant like sudafed and a cough medicine w/only an exptorant in it, which will help break up any "drip" that is in your throat or chest.
Stay well hydrated - lots of water, tea w/honey, etc. Throat losenges can be helpful too. One thing you can also try, and this is kind of gross (but it works) - take a shot of olive oil. I sang a lot when I was younger and this was something we did when we needed to - keeps the vocal chords moist.

Re: Lost voice - need to entertain this weekend - tips?
thank you all so much for your replies & advice!!
my voice is a bit better, thanks to all your tips. I had mint tea, lemon juice, I gargled with salt water, and I forced myself to talk & not whisper.
I'm now enjoying a beer with a little bit of voice.

Throat coat tea, at GNC. Singers use it. Works great, tastes gross but works great. It has eucalyptus in it.
I actually love the taste Add honey to sweeten it.
Stay hydrated. If you do take an allergy pill make sure to drink tons of extra water. Antihistamines are very drying to the vocal folds.
Sleep too if you can....sleep is awesome for the voice and health in general.
Feel better
