NYC: "A" rated schools

When looking at schools, is there really a difference in a school rated "A" versus any other letter?

The school I am interviewing at is rated "A" and in the top 10 HS in NYC.

I'm just trying to figure out if that really means anything to me, since I know a lot of criteria goes into a schools' rating.

I agree w/PP. That said if a school got an A I think it would be safe to say it is a good school to be in kwim? Sometimes I see HS's w/B or even C yet I know they are good schools so I am confused.

If you want to FM me the name I may know about the school Chat Icon

Take it with a grain of salt. My school got an A for "School Environment" but B and C for other things- I know one was student achievement. But so much is smoke and mirrors and kids and teachers being on their "best" behavior when the reviewers come. I don't think there is necessarily a lot of authenticity sometimes.

Re: NYC: "A" rated schools

the grades for other areas besides performance and progress are based on the student and teacher surveys that get filled out each march. depending upon the attitude in the building towards admin, etc. it could go either way very quickly.

for example: one year, our parents misread one question and responded that we had gang violence in our school (we don't) because there are gangs in the NEIGHBORHOOD.

that said, getting an A is fairly difficult now, and they usually only go to the better schools.

I teach at an A rated school in Queens and every year the pressure is tremendous to maintain the A. It's a lot of added stress!

I can imagine. In my interview, they mention their regents passing rate and whether or not I had a problem obtaining that. lol
