After you had a loss...

Did you notice a change in your nails?

I noticed my nails have horizontal white lines and are indented in that area ..... I noticed it coincidentally about two weeks after my d&c.

My accupuncturist said he did not know for sure but he thought it could have been from all the trauma to my body from the loss, especially after the treatments it took to get pregnant in the first place.

Anyone have anything similar happen? Chat Icon

ETA: It's on all of my nails on both hands.

I noticed that my nails aren't as strong but it could be due to my boycott of prenatal vitamins

No but after each one I found one single thick, white hair on my head, which I was told was normal because of hormones. I thought it was strange but at 27, I'm just happy that it's only been a few to date.

Re: After you had a loss...

interesting you post this.

i know i might sound insane right now with what I'm about to say... but I'll say it anyway. I've read a lot about palm reading... and parts of palm reading have to do with reading the nails as well.
in the world of hand reading they say that when you get indented lines going across your nails that is a sign of trauma or major stress, depression, etc. Basically a moment in your life where something went terribly wrong for you. it's like a marking of a really bad point in your life.

I did consequently have these lines after my mc on my thumb nails and a few other nails... but not every single nail had it.

eventually they grow out... and you can also try to buff them down.

Thank you for letting me know this, actually my acupuncturist said the SAME thing so for now, that's the diagnosis I am going with.

I hope it grows itself out soon!!Chat Icon

It took a good amount of months to fully grow out. But I was able to buff them so they looked better at least. I haven't had them since that time in my life.

I fully believe that's the cause of it.

I've had this a few times in my life actually (prior to my mc) and it was always during a bad time in my life or when I was experiencing more than the usual amount of stress or I was just really upset or even depressed.

I just so happened to start reading books on hand reading not long after my mc... and I had those marks at the time. It was an astonishing find at that moment for me.

I hope you are doing well... are as well as can be expected.

I keep trying to minimize what I went through because I know there are people who go through so much worse. . .but it's so true .. it was such a trauma to my body and it's amazing how the body responds to these things, everything down to the fingernails!

i was somewhat the same way.. with minimizing it.
I was seeing a mc therapist at the time and I would minimize it in the room with her (for the same reasons...I even said "there are people who go through so much worse")... and she told me to stop doing that because it was a big thing for me to go through and it doesn't matter what anyone else went though that was worse or not as bad... bc this is what I went through and this is what I'm reacting to in this time. And I'm allowed to be as upset as I am or need to be over it. Basically she was trying to take the focus off of what others went through and trying to get me to not hold back anymore so that I can focus more on myself. I see her point. Can't say if it was what helped me... at that point nothing was really "helping". I think I just needed A LOT of time!!

And you are right with what you said about it being a trauma to the body... it really is! And on so many levels too.

I just saw this post..

They're called "beau's lines". I remember learning about this in PA school. It has to do with a stress (physical and/or emotional) on the body.

So, they are 100% real. I don't remember the pathophysiology behind it though..Chat Icon

Re: After you had a loss...

Thanks ladies!!

I happened to go to the doctor earlier this week for a sore throat and asked him about it while I was there.

He confirmed that it's caused my trauma/stress.

It must def be related to stress.

I had a large indent on every nail for a very long time when I was going through everything and even had it through out most of my pregnancy too.

I remember asking the nail salon about it and they never knew why. I dont have them anymore so I am sure it was related to my losses, and then just nerves.

I hope you are doing well!!!

I always check the boards to see how you are doing.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I actually asked my nail salon about it too and they said they have seen it in teens going through puberty. At that point I figured maybe it was hormonal- though I'm pretty convinced now that it has to be from stress.. even my doctor said that was probably it.
