my dog and thunderstorms

For the first time ever, he peed during these past two horrible thunderstorms. Last night, he was whimpering during the storm and I let him out of his cage (i guess a mistake). This morning I woke up and he peed on my dishwasher

Today, DH just got home at the tail end of this storm and there's pee all over the kitchen!

Anything we can do to soothe him? We werent even home for the second storm so I feel horrible!

I'm not sure how to deal with the peeing but I know with any agitated or anxious dog, you can't feed into it in any way. No talking to them to calm them, no trying to give them treats, etc. If the crate represents a safe spot, I could see where that might have been a problem to let him out.

Have you ever heard of the thundershirt? Since it's a new problem, you may be able to break it by showing confidence and not reacting to the thunder at all. If you know they're coming, getting a long walk in before it happens would be good to tire him out and to make sure his bladder is empty too.
