PROBLEM

So last week I has shin splints. I rested and iced for four days .. Then I ran Sat and Sun (just a little over 3 miles each) Well during the run SUnday I was almost at 3 miles and I had to walk some. My shin really hurt.

This a.m. its hurting a little. But now my knee (same leg) hurts too. It feels like if I put too much pressure on it its going to buckle.

Does anyone know this feeling and what it could be? Im nervous I injured it.

Re: PROBLEM

I would make an appointment with an orthopedist. 4 days rest isn't really enough. You might have been turning your leg to take the pain away from the shin and ended up with a knee problem. I've done that before during a marathon (except I was trying to take the pain away from my hip).
Anyway, I've been dealing with a shin problem as well. I rested it for 3 weeks and am gradually getting back into running. So far so good. Sometimes, you just have to take some time off and cross train (bike or elliptical). But I would see a doctor to play it safe Chat Icon

Re: PROBLEM

Stop running until you see an orthopedist!!

I always beg people who are hurt not to continue to run. Sometimes I wonder if I had stopped running the moment i felt pain if I'd be any better today.

Re: PROBLEM

Everything in the body is connected - one pain can lead to another, to another.

Muscles/tendons in the lower leg run up to the knee so that could be a factor, sometimes when you are running in pain you alter your gait which then causes compensatory pain in other areas.

If you were having serious shin pain 4 days doesnt seem like enough rest - I would check in with a Dr to be safe!

Yes. Pain is your body telling you something is wrong. could be as simple as needing new sneakers. Checking your form. Or just needing a rest.

Stretch it well and don't forget to do strengthening exercises.

Re: PROBLEM

ITA about getting to a doctor. Shin splints are often confused with stress fractures.
