Re: Elwood SD
I don't have SPED info about Elwood, but just to let you know Elwood is going through some major financial problems. They are looking to merge with another school district (HHH, Harborfields, N-ENpt, So Hunt or Commack) all 5 SD rejected it this year, but I'm sure they will try again.

Re: Elwood SD
Thanks! I am not sure if I should take a gamble and forget the house all together or come with an attorney at a CPSE meeting?

Are you thinking of moving to Elwood? You'll be so close!
I don't know anything about SPED there. We are in the Northport district, we are right smack in the middle of both districts.

This was just posted recently on the Nassau Suffolk Autism Society message board. Not sure if you posted the question there and this is a repeat for you.

We live in the Elwood District and have nothing but wonderful things to say about the district. My autistic son is 13 and my son with Selective Mutism is 9. Although the Director of Special Ed that we dealt with when my autistic son was younger is now gone (we just loved him), the new Director of Special Ed and the supporting staff are just as supportive and professional. My autistic son is also pretty low functioning, he is at James E. Allen Jr/Sr High School now (he was at the elementary since he was 5 and at DDI before that). I love it there, and the district is very content to leave him there. There is no pressure to mainstream him at all because they know he thrives there. They really defer to the teaching staff of our kids and are very open to listening to parents. You know what they say, the squeaky wheel gets the oil (but you do get more flies with honey than with vinegar), and I follow that philosophy to the T with this district and would strongly encourage anyone to do the same. P.S. I also like that the district is small and it is not overrun with too many kids, parents, etc. I get a more personal feel, I think, than if I were in Commack, for instance. Good luck. Not Elwood. But either Huntington, Greenlawn or maybe Centerport.
