For those who spend more $$$ on more expensive dog food
Our vet told DH that we did not need to spend as much as we did on his food. That's what happen when I send DH taking care of a follow up visit.
I am a bit taking back by this.
We buy the Eukanuba PURE growth puppy food. It has no filler or wheat.
It's very $$$$. $34/15 Lbs bag. And the baby eats about 5 cups per day.
Vet said to just switch to regular Eukanuba large breed puppy.
Of course, one of my clients told me that HER vet said it absolutely made a difference. She uses Buffalo Blue (???).
Is it worth fighting it with DH????
My other dogs eat Science Diet

We used to feed my cat meow mix. Our vet said it was like feeding her McDonalds every day. She had to be put on a special kidney diet which was an Iams brand. They switched to hills science because they don't test on animals. When we got our second cat we fed her the regular kitten and later adult hills science diet. The older one has since passed away and we adopted a kitten who is also eating hills. I think nutrition is important. I think buy the best food you can afford and make sure lean protein like chicken or pork is the #1 ingredient. That changes within flavors of the same brand.

I think the best thing to do would be to research what makes a food good in your opinion, compare your brand with others, and then ask your vet why he said what he did.
Even from a vet, an opinion has more value when there's a dialogue about why they feel that way. I'm not saying I know more about everything, but I usually don't take opinions at face value, even from doctors and experts. Even they can disagree on a lot of things.
Five cups. Wow. Still waiting to see more pictures of him.

We paid big bucks when our dog gained forty pounds with anti-seizure medication and went on the vet high fiber food ( we had to buy it there) . The same practice, different vet said we could regulate his food with Purina Fit and Trim. In the last six months he has lost 44 pounds!
So I agree with the PP that you should have a conversation with your vet as to why a certain food is better.

I did not have the conversation directly with him.
Essentially (per DH), the vet said the food we have is VERY good but we did not have to buy it and it's not readily available. We could stick to the same brand (Eukanuba) and get the regular puppy food not the more expensive version. The vet did not think the difference was really that drastic. So if we wanted to spend the $$$, he thought it was fine. As long as we stay within "better" brands.
DH think we should mix the food (the $$$ and the less expensive version but still same brand).

We use Blue Buffalo. I dont mind spending the $$$ cause it has helped with his skin issues so it cuts down on vet visits and medications

We use Wellness Healthy Weight because that is what her foster home had her eating since she was overweight when they rescued her from the shelter. When we asked our vet he said if we could afford to keep her on it then it wasn't a bad idea to prevent future weight gain and potential hip issues.
Since then we also learned she gets empty-tummy issues so she eats a lot of snacks throughout the day so this helps to keep her from gaining weight but we make sure she never gets sick from being hungry.
I'd definitely have another conversation with the vet to find out his reasoning.

I know a lot of people who do that with my brand because of the price. I'd check on the protein content though because I believe the level can affect growing puppies. And too-high protein isn't good for older dogs because it may lead to kidney problems.

I feed an expensive brand plus I make my own raw diet that is $$$$. I definitely think my boy is healthier for it. I constantly get comments about his shiny coat and very white teeth. He also has zero dog breath. I attribute all of these things and more to his diet. I believe that a healthier food keeps them out of the vet's office so it's worth the investment. JMO

I agree. Just b/c my one is a fussy eater,I go back and forth between Innova and Evo (same manufacturer, different flavors and size of pieces).
I have 2 large German Shepherds, both have stunning coats and amazing teeth. I am trying to give them both the best chance at not having hip issues later as well.
After we paid $2800 to have my Rottie's ACL replaced 2 years ago, the orthopedic vet recommended Innova for seniors for her, she had been on ProPlan, still a good food. What a difference! I attribute part of her recovery and her excellent health now to the better quality of food she is getting, she just turned 11 (or 12, she's a rescue) and you would never know she had her ACL replaced or that she is that old.

we use and always have used Innova for our Pug it works and he never had any issues with it so we are sticking with it doesn't make a difference how much it cost

We have been feeding my dog the same $$$$ food since we adopted him. (nutro ultra) The vets constantly remark on his good shape (since pugs are notorious for being in bad shape, especially at his age). I 'd like to think the food is directly responsible for that.
For that reason (and his fantastic health for the past 7 years) I wouldnt dream of changing his food- no price will affect that.
