Dog vomit with blood in it

Ginger was vomiting all day Sunday. Starting on Monday she kept all her food down and was fine. Then whatever it was must have hit Brinkley because the last meal he was able to keep down was Monday's breakfast.

In the middle of the night he vomited and it was orange. I realized that it was because there was some blood mixed with the yellow bile. He vomited again after that and there was no blood. He's keeping breakfast down so far this morning and I'm waiting for my vet's office to call me about going in with him today.

I'm trying not to freak out. Chat Icon Has this happened to anyone before, and if so, was there a diagnosis from the vet? I know sometimes dogs just throw up, no use looking too hard for the problem. But the blood threw me for a loop. Chat Icon

I have never experienced that. Must be scary.Chat Icon

Could she have eaten something rough that is scratching her stomach or esophagus? Is she a dog that eats random things?

Re: Dog vomit with blood in it

I have seen spots of blood when my dog throws up sticks/grass - I think the sticks cause irritation. If it's not a LOT of blood I wouldn't worry too much - but I would email Dr. Gurtman! Chat Icon

Re: Dog vomit with blood in it

Thanks ladies Chat Icon

I brought Brinkley to the vet and Dr. Kothari was concerned that he was stiffening up when she palpated his stomach. So they tried taking an xray but he was so anxious about being in there and up on the table that they had to sedate him. Chat Icon

They took bloodwork and injected some fluids under his skin to rehydrate him. His gum color was good but they were dry. His xray & bloodwork came back clean so we have 2 meds that will help his digestive health the next few days. It's probably just a virus.

I didn't anticipate how lethargic he was going to be after the sedation. I had to lift all 71 pounds of him to get him into and out of the car. He couldn't even walk straight. Chat Icon Good thing I've been working out. Chat Icon

I'm hoping he keeps food down today and has more energy later/tomorrow.

Re: Dog vomit with blood in it

By the way, she said the blood could have been some capillaries bursting from the strain of vomiting so much, or it could have been stomach ulcers. The bloodwork didn't point to any ulcers, so it appears it was just the bile and effort of vomiting so much. Poor guy.

Re: Dog vomit with blood in it

Thanks ladies! Chat Icon He did vomit blood again yesterday afternoon but he also has empty stomach syndrome, so that was because DH didn't time the snacks better.

I'm happy to say he's a lot better. Once the anesthesia wore off, we gave him more rice that he kept down, and for the first time since Saturday, we had a full night's sleep!

I'm pretty tough but these guys have a line straight to my heart. I was so sad for him yesterday. He peed like a racehorse this morning, presumably from the under-skin hydration they did yesterday. They're in the office with me and nothing lifts his spirits but getting attention from lots of people Chat Icon

Thanks again, it's so nice to share with people who understand, when things like this happen! Chat Icon

So glad to hear he's doing better! Chat Icon

I hope he has a full recovery soon. It's so scary when dogs don't feel well because they can't tell you what's wrong.
