What if they don't behave during the meeting? I mean, not like he's going to be "bad" per se, but if it's a sit down meeting for adults, how can I expect my 2 yr old to sit still and quiet for that long? Even if I bring crayons, toys, etc (is that even allowed?) what if he starts to act up?

Or is that the point?

An evaluator (the one who seems to think
eI has failed us) suggested we bring our child to show what doesn't talk means and so they put a face to the recommendations, but then someone else said wait to bring her for the kindergarten meeting. We are not going to bring her since we feel her receptive is strong and we don't want her to hear all they would say and because honestly it could be hard for me to make my points, etc. If she was disruptive. I like the idea of a picture.

You can bring toys. We have crayons and paper at our meetings at the district I work for. You might want to bring another adult to keep on eye on Ur child just in case because your full attention should be on the meeting.

If you ar going to bring your child I would absolutely suggest bringing another adult to bring him/her into the room to meet them and then to take him/her out of the room. My meetings usually end up being an hour with lots of adults. I'm not sure how old your child is, but I'm not sure they should always hear all is said.

We brought my daughter to many of her CPSE meetings. They actually did some evaluations during the first one. The proceeding meetings, they were able to see her progress first hand. Definitely bring 2 people and some toys! Our CPSE dept has a toy room so that helped as well.

I agree with this--you want to be able to focus on the meeting also. I don't think it's a bad thing if DC is disruptive otherwise--most 2 year olds would be in a conference room full of adults!

We chose not to bring DS, mainly because he does do fairly well in his interactions with adults at times, much better than with other children. We just felt the CPSE committee might think "what are they talking about?", especially if he was having a good day. If he's not having a good day, they would have seen exactly what we were talking about, so it was dicey. It's up to you, and I think this varies depending upon your child.

Excellent point, DS is the same. I'll sleep on it I guess. We have months before his meeting anyway so we'll see where this all goes.

thanks everyone!

Re: When you say to bring your child to the CPSE meeting...

I will tell you WHY I bring DS with me and not a pic like some people suggested.

DH and I go. Why? Because it looks more like DH is involved. We are serious about this. It's all about IMPRESSIONS. Sad but true!

DS comes with us. Why? Because it's easier to understand why he needs services. He does not talk. He said "Ahhh" non stop at a special meeting I called in to increase speech. CPSE chairman even mentioned that he had not said 1 real word the entire meeting. DS flaps his hands. I mean... they really get it when they see DS. It's not me and therapists/schools BSing everyone to get services just because.

Now, we bring snacks, juice, etc... for him to be occupied. One of us takes turns to entertain him so we don't miss out on thing in the meeting.

We all dress up. Even DS. We dress to impress. DS looks super cute. We look professional.

I always say.... it's about selling your case! Why you want services, who the services go to. You present your child and yourself, you present the report and you make your case.

Re: When you say to bring your child to the CPSE meeting...

I didn't bring my DS and probably never will. I find the meetings to be stressful and at times emotional. For me, having DS there would cause more stress and anxiety than I need. I feel like I am able to hold my own pretty well in the meetings, but not sure how it would go if DS was there. I don't have someone to come with me and take care of him, other than DH and my DH wants to participate in the meeting with me.

As he gets older and understands more, I don't think he needs to sit through a meeting and hear me talk about all his deficiencies.

I totally agree. I really don't want my DD in the room when we are talking about her. Also when we are out in public at first glance she shows no signs of being autisic. When I am with her she talks, doesn't stim, has great eye contact but get her alone or spend the day with her it's a totally different story. The committee would think I'm nuts asking for services if she was there. I find it much better to have the people advocate for her that know the whole picture not just to show them a few minutes snapshot.
