Runners... I have a Race Sunday Rain or Shine.... Update: Race Cancelled

NJ will be getting the worst of Irene on Sunday morning. I have a 8:30 am run rain or shine.

Any advice?

My friend told me to bring an umbrella while waiting to start (I like to line up 15 minutes early) and ditch it right before start. I will feel like a goober doing that.

I will run with a ballcap (I usually don't). Should I get a hooded shirt instead?

I am going to think of this as an adventure.....

Update:

Thanks for all of your advice. I was notified this morning that the race was cancelled. Officials are not sure if if will be reschedueled. Chat Icon

Running in the rain is fun!! If you don't want to have to toss your umbrella before the start you can also wear a plastic garbage over your clothes as a poncho. That's easy to ditch.

I've never done it but I've heard of people putting duct tape over their shoelaces so the water doesn't leak in.

I would wait until 5 minutes before to line up...I usually get in the middle of the pack.

I agree with the poncho idea. They sell cheap ones with hoods at cvs that you can ditch. You'll have fun, I did a 4 mile race in the rain once! It will definitely be an adventure!

I would go with a garbage bag and baseball cap. The cap will help keep the rain out of your eyes, I don't think a hood will work for that. Good luck!

Personally, if I know for sure that it's going to rain I prefer to wear as little or as light clothing as possible. The more you wear, the more you will be bogged down by extra water being absorbed by your clothes. And yes, a cap/hat is a must. Water in your eyes/face is the worst. If it's raining especially hard, I like to run with my head tilted slightly forward (and cap) to keep the rain out of my face.

I run in the rain all the time. All I do is make sure I have a hat on and I am good to go. I suggest bringing a change of clothes/shoes/towel for afterwards as you will be soaked.

ETA: I do not think a poncho is necessary. I have been caught in MANY unexpected downpours. Once you get wet, it doesn't matter how wet you get.

When you finish the race, take off your sneakers and roll up pieces of newspaper and stick them in your shoes. This will dry them out quickly (less than one day). Change the newspaper if necessary.

ITA! less is more. I also agree with once you're wet; you're wet. It's not really a big deal, just make sure you have some dry clothes waiting for you.

but I have to say, I don't think the rain is going to be coming in the morning - you might be OK.

I am signed up for the 10K in Jamesport this Sunday and very torn about what to do!! Mostly because it's an hour away from my house.

I think I will go no matter what and hope for the best - but like the others said, I will actually just wear what I normally do - running shorts and a tank top. Then I will have dry clothes in the car.

This!!!!

i ran a half marathoni in the rain last year and i was soaked within seconds. You might as well embrace it. I wore a light-weight water resistant vent with hood from lululemon. It kept the rain out of my eyes and prevented my shirt from totally being soaked.

I agree with a PP about wearing as little as possible. If you have two pairs of sneakers that you run in, I'd suggest wearing the more abused pair.

That stinks...I think every race this Sunday will be cancelled. The Tobay triathalon was too and they can't afford to reschedule it...I feel bad for everyone that trained for that.
