Resource Room Teachers--Help!!

This is my first year teaching resource room, I've only done inclusion and self-contained classes in the past.

I need some ideas for the first few days if any resource room teachers can share, I would be extremely grateful!!

My resource room is 9th and 10th graders.

Thanks for any help!!

Re: Resource Room Teachers--Help!!

For me the first few days are getting info together. I talk to them about their classes, schedules, concerns, problems and etc... I usually have them do a baseline reading comprehenshion, math and reading assessment of some sort so I know what I am working with. For the 9th graders, I would discuss transition to HS concerns, lockers, when they can go to their lockers and etc... Believe it or not, there are lots of logistical things that need to be covered in the first few days. I would also speak to the students about their rights and accommodations and how they should be advocating for themselves with their teachers of the other subjects. GOod luck! I love resource room!

Re: Resource Room Teachers--Help!!

Last year was my first year teaching Resource Room and I LOVED it!! Before that I taught self-contained. i have 9-12th graders. The first day is so laid back. I go over their schedules with them, make sure they know where everything is (esp. high schoolers). I also have them fill out a survey (I actually have to find it for this year again!)- I like to know what they struggle with the most, their favorite subjects, strengths, weaknesses, etc. We talk about what they expect from Resource Room. We talk about what I expect from them.
Also within the first few weeks I like to go over their IEPs and goals with them. I think its very important for them to understand what their disability is and why they are receiving services. They should know what accommodations they are provided with during exams. We also talk about their goals for the year and how we will meet them.
