So, um...what else could I do with an education degree?

I've known this for a while, I don't know why I keep trying to tell myself that I'm wrong or I keep trying to "make it fit", but I'm just not happy being a teacher. Now that I'm a mom of 2, I'm realizing that teaching is just a source of stress for me at this point...I don't have time to plan, I'm underpaid and overworked, and my kids get the last 3% of me at the end of the day.

I'm thinking it's time for a career change. What else can I do with an education degree and a Masters in Literacy? Chat Icon

Re: So, um...what else could I do with an education degree?

I have been thinking the same thingChat Icon I work at a residential school for severely disabled children. It is so rough. it is also an hour away, 1.5 hours with traffic. I get hit, pinched, kicked, have to change teenagers diapers, etc...on a daily basis. If I am not on my game I could get severely hurt (someone had their nose broke the other day when a child head butted her). It is very draining. I then do after school ABA in two children's homes who both have Autism. I then go home to my 15 month old...lol. I am driving about 100 miles a day. Part of me is very grateful that I have a job!! The other part of me thinks "how much longer can I do this??" (at the school). I do like my ABA hours and it pays well but there are no benifits and I could not survive on just that as an income. SO I have been thinking about getting a new career in the day and keeping my ABA hours in the afternoon. But what?? Also, I have completed my 3 years of teaching so I can get my professional certificate...but if I am not teaching how to I get those workshop hours??? TIA!!!

This will be my last year, after 15 years. I understand where you are coming from.

Just to give you an idea, my plan is to get something part-time. I am not sure what kind of part time job I will be able to land, but I will look. A very local full-time job would be fine too. Right now I commute 1.5 hours each way; I leave at 5:30 and get home at 5:15.

I am going to spend this year launching a freelance copywriting business. There are a few areas that are lucrative with lots of demand, so I am trying to learn a lot. I have the skills, I just need the ins and outs. I am a little anxious about full-time freelancing but that is my goal and I am going to transition to it gradually. One day I asked myself, Can I do this for 15 more years? and the answer was no. The benefit, so far? I have been enjoying this year more since I know it will be my last.

I could have written this myself. I am currently on childcare leave for the past two and I just can't bring myself to go back. Everyday I sit here and ask myself what can I do instead? So frustrating!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I give you MAJOR props for sticking with it for 15 years. This is my 7th year, I'm 31 years old, and I just keep thinking to myself, I can't keep going this way!

The thing that REALLY s*cks is that I never wanted to do ANYTHING else with my life. This is what I've wanted to do since I was 4 years old. So technically speaking, I'm "living my dream". But it sure isn't what I had hoped for. Yeah, my "working hours" might be 7-2:30, but we all know the work doesn't end there, and I just feel like MY kids are being raised by someone else so I can then get paid to raise other peoples' children.

I'm looking into other options. For now, I have an interview w/ Sylvan Learning Center here in Charlotte later this week. Working for Sylvan was one of the ONLY times I've ever enjoyed teaching, and I'm excited to recapture that feeling again. Plus, it'll leave me time during the day to spend with my kids, without having to completely let go of the education field.

I just wish I knew what I wanted to be when I grow up, since apparently I was wrong... Chat Icon

I know you're not in the area, but Dowling College is actually holding a seminar for people with teaching degrees and what other options there are.

I am thinking of attending, so if I do, I'll report back!!

I attended the one at Hofstra back in June. I was actually just coming here to post this link for Beth, but maybe it'll benefit others. It's some of the powerpoint presentations from the conference. Hopefully this will give you some ideas!
