Abbys not really eating

I dont know what to do. She "seems" hungrey because she LOVES the cats food. I mean loves it, we have to remember to keep it up high if shes in the room with it so she doesnt get at it.

I started her on Science Diet for puppies and just switched her to Nutra Max for puppies.

She ate about 4-5 pieces of food ALL day?!?!

I finally caved and bought the nutra max wet food and she ate like a starving animal about a half a can, then didnt want any more.

I just feel like shes not eating enough at all? ?!?!

Do you think the heat may be affecting her?

I dont think so because she wasnt eating much from the start and if she even gets near the cats food she gets all crazy like shes starving and a week or so ago we saw her eating away at their food, we figured out how she was getting near it.

i was told that it def can give the runs and smelly poop...
You definitely do not want to be picking or scrubbing that up off the floor

I KNOW! Chat Icon Chat Icon

It really was a last resort to get her to eat and I only gave her a half can when it said up to 2 cans for her weight and age.

Re: Abbys not really eating

maybe you could just take a table spoon of the wet food and mix it in with the dry...

and then slowly give her less and less wet and more dry

Re: Abbys not really eating

i noticed mookiee eating a lot less these last 2 days too...think its the weather...but def try to mix a little wet with some dry, i give her like1/2- 3/4 dry and 1/4-1/2 wet, that may help!

Re: Abbys not really eating

When we got Misty she was on Iam's and would hardly eat her food - like a couple of kibbles at a time. When we switched her over to the Beneful, she ate it right up. To this day, she practically dances around the house when she sees us getting her food and she eats it all right away.
My guess is that Abby just does not like the food, try going back to what she was eating or giving her something else.

Good luck!

Re: Abbys not really eating

Should she want to eat it right away when I put it in the bowl?

Re: Abbys not really eating

Dogs eat less in the heat. And mixing the wet with dry is a good idea, ontil you hardly use wet at all.

And try another brand.

Ebony's bowl is full all the time, but he only eats when someone is around to "keep him company".

Re: Abbys not really eating

Donna - these dogs NEVER eat. I used to freak out about it and switched the food a few times.

Molly loved Beneful (I know it's not the BEST of the dog foods but she would eat it so that's all I cared about) I also gave her Iams (before I knew the bad stuff) I always mix her dry food with one teaspoon of the wet Beneful food. I think that's why she eats.

Now I give her Purina One with the beneful. She will really only eat one time a day.

OH - and DEF. give Abby FROZEN carrots. It's good for their teeth and they will play with it for AT LEAST 20 minutes.

Re: Abbys not really eating

It could be the heat.
Murphy went through a phase like this and the vet asked what food we were feeding and she said that was a premium food and to let it go 3 days. After that, a vet appt would be advisable. But 3 days is a safe enough time to see what happens when they get really hungry.

Misty doesn't eat if I put food in the bowl and leave the house, but if we are home she chows down right away.

Martin never does that....

I will put down his bowl and he will come and go as he chooses....
NEVER sits and eats all at once...

In fact...sometimes it will take a day or two for him to finish his bowl

This is what I have done when my dogs are being stubborn eaters. They go through phases every once and awhile, and for no reason.

Re: Abbys not really eating

When dogs are used to eating wet food it is hard to get them back to strictly dry...

so if i were you i would try to be strict with that....If that is what you want.

She will test you and not eat until you cave....

But trust me...when the dog is hungry...she will eat the food. She will not starve
