Between teacher workdays and early releases???

It's ridiculous!!! Here in NC my boys started back at Elementary school on 8/25. So far, they've already had 1 Early release day (6 in a school year) and 1 Teacher workday (6 in a school year) and as of this coming Friday they have another Early release day and then another Teacher workday on 10/31. And on top of it, DD's preschool already had a teacher workday and is closed on Monday for a Teacher Workday. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon They have only been in school not even 6 weeks!!! Chat Icon Do you know how hard it is to take off from work so much without your boss getting pi@@ed off???

Ok, vent over....

Re: Between teacher workdays and early releases???

I know what you mean...Once a month there is Teacher In-Service day and the school is closed for students. Plus there are a bunch of random days they get off. In November they have have 6 or 7 days off, totally ridiculous IMO.

Luckily I have flexibility with my job to work from home or they go to my inlaws house for the day. Our afterschool program also has a program where the kids can still come for the entire day if there's no school (holidays excluded). For those holidays that I don't typically get off my husband works for the state, so he us usually off.

That's strange. I'm a teacher and I believe there are 2 or 3 half days for parent teacher conferences, and one superintendents conference day. There MIGHT be one more but I don't think so.

The first two posters live OOS, not NY.

As an attempted solution to the education budget crisis, many districts in other states have cut back on instruction time... Very sad...

For the past three years, my friend's kids have 3-4 half days (thurs) per month, every month. She has been forced to reduce her hours to part time status, she's a physical therapist.

As a teacher and as a parent, I think it's ridiculous... what are working parents supposed to do.

My DC's new school (private pre-school through elem) is VERY small (8 kids in 5th grade class)... probably less than 50 kids from 1-5 grades but they still reserved FOUR days for parent teacher's conferences at the beginning of April... so my IL' in their 70's have to watch them all day for 4 daysChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My kids are in private school. They did not have off for the Jewish New Year last week. However, they have 1/2 day tomorrow. They are off on Halloween (Diocesan teacher conference), Nov.1 (All Saints Day), and then again on Nov. 4th (teacher professional day). Not to mention again they are off for Veteran's Day and then again 1/2 day the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, then the Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving! There are a lot of teacher professional days (3) and Diocesan conferences!

Re: Between teacher workdays and early releases???

In our district they eliminated teacher conference/super intendants days and instead the kids are released an hour early two Wednesdays a month. Fir me, it's actually fine because I work part time and am able to get him off the bus those days when I usually wouldn't be able to- I work afternoons. What bothers me is that I teach dance and the center I teach at follows one district calendar and my son is in a different district. They have two different spring breaks.
