I would like to pull your son (insert name) informally for speech services once per week.

she is probably pulling hiim for at risk services. She may feel that there is a little bit of a problem but not enough to warrant a speech eval. You could always ask to have a speech eval done. In addition, if he is not mandated for speech, and actually does need it, if there are kids that actually do get mandated services, your son would lose the service.

Sounds like what they are doing with my dd. I got a note home asking about possible speech services and was like Chat Icon My dd speaks very clear and pronounces everything perfectly. Shes been in school since about 2 and I have never heard that there was a problem. When the speech teacher called me, she said it wasnt about dd's speech perse but rather about how she chooses to use her words. For example she will say "hers bothering me" rather then "shes bothering me". With that, she does not "qualify" for speech services but she wants to randomly take Gillian out of class to work on things like that. Its a very temporary thing that can be corrected. You probably need to give the speech teacher a call to see exactly what your child is doing to warrant the services. I figure anything that will help dd is certainly worth it.

I agree with the above posters, but I know if that happens in my school, the teacher would have spoken with the parent before the speech pathologist would even be involved!

This is true. The teacher sent me home a note prior to the speech teacher even seeing dd. That made me nervous in itself bc I thought there was a bigger issue. The speech teacher squashed the whole thing and made it a "temporary" grammatic situation.

I agree with the other posters. By "informally" the speech pathologist means your son would not be receiving speech as a special education service. He would not be classified as a special education student. Rather, he would be getting an "educationally related support service (ERSS)". It's any service provided to general education students who are not mandated to receive the service through the CSE (special education).

Sounds like RtI (response to intervention). All NYS schools must have a system by 2012.

Being grammatical, it could be affecting learning and she may have been brought up to IST (instructional support team). They usually recommend a short term plan and monitor improvements. After that it would escalate to more testing and a CSE(committee on special Ed) evaluation. The whole idea is that small steps are taken to see what helps the student and there is essentially a paper trail ensuring that the school district is working to help the student.

I wasnt sure if you were talking to me or the OP. I dont think that it was a learning thing specifically bc the teacher sent the note home on day 2 or 3. SO she really didnt know her well enough. I think she thought dd was not pronouncing words correctly. Which was the reason for the evaluation. The speech teacher said her words are fine BUT in the process she found that her grammatical context was a little off. Therefore making the need for temporary services. This is what I gathered.
