quick ? for teachers - any grade level
I am writing a short paper for my Ed Theory class and I was wondering if some of you would share with me your school's routine for teacher evaluation. Is it once a year? Who handles it? Is it based on one person's opinion, or that of several people? Is any peer review involved?
I don't need a ton of details, just need an idea of how these things are handled.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: quick ? for teachers - any grade level
I teach in the city.
3 or 4 (supposed to be 4) observations 2 in Math 2 in literacy done by a principal or asst. principal. We recieve a pre-op and a post up meeting. At the post op we should get a written report about the strengths and weaknesses the principal noticed and observed. It never really happens though.
FM if you need anything!

Re: quick ? for teachers - any grade level
generally you will be observed throughout the year by different people:
~ chairperson (usually 1-2 times) ~ grade-level Assistant Principal (1x) ~ Principal (1x) ~ Assistant Superintendent (1x)
Obviously, depending on the district and the age you teach, it may vary.

Re: quick ? for teachers - any grade level
I teach in the city and we are supposed to have 6 a year if you are untenured. Two from the principal and the rest by an assistant principal. They can be formal or informal and very rarely is there a pre-observation. Sometimes there is a post. Last year the principal didn't observe me at all and this year she did informal ones and it is my tenure year.
BTW: I teach high school English.

Re: quick ? for teachers - any grade level
I teach primary in California - not sure if you're looking for practices of all schools or just those in your area, but here it is anyway
Pre-tenure, we're observed twice a year, every year, by either the principal or assistant principal. One lesson is math, one lesson language arts. We have a pre and post observation conference. There is no peer review. The administrator fills out your evaluation based only on his/her opinion.
Post-tenure, evaluations are based on one observation every other year (same people & process as above).

Re: quick ? for teachers - any grade level
i'm a speech teacher in an elementary school in NJ. in my district, for non tenured teachers, you get observed 3 times a year- at least one by a principal, then the others are by other people ( for me it is the director of special ed). after each observation, they meet with you and go over everything... then all 3 observation reports get combined in a yearly evaluation summary...
once you're tenured, you get observed only once a year, or you have the option of doing some kind of portfolio project ( i think). most people just opt for the observation...

Re: quick ? for teachers - any grade level
Im an untenured elementary teacher in a public school in Nassau.
We have 4 observations. 2 announced and 2 unannounced. All four are done with the principal. We get a written evaluation for each one and have a follow up meeting to discuss the lesson. We also have one "classroom visit" from the superintendent which is scheduled.
Tenured teachers have 2 observations a year or they can create goals for them selves and meet with the principal a few times a year to discuss the progress of their goals.
