What else can I do with an education degree?

I'm so frustrated right now that I'm in tears. I'm tired of subbing and having it go nowhere. I'm in my third year as a permanent sub in a district where that position doesn't lead to anything, not even leave replacements. Without previous lead replacement experience, I'm not looked at by any principal for leave replacement positions. Without leave replacement experience, I'm not looked at for full-time positions.

I'm tired of being "just a sub". I'm tired of never having any money, no matter how hard I put everything I earn away to save because my student loans are through the roof. I'm tired of having a car that breaks down, but that I can't afford to replace so I just have to deal with it. I'm tired of not having my own health benefits, so that I have to go on Healthy NY and pay $400 a month. I'm tired of being on Healthy NY because I can't earn over $2,200 a month or else it gets cut, and I'm tired of being stuck at a job just because it pays less than that. And I'm tired of being so frustrated that I cry everyday.

I am so sorry to hear about your troubles in your district. Would you be willing to work in the city? I could ask around about openings for you. What is your certification?

Its such a scary time for teachers now, and I'm sorry about your situation. There are positions "training specialists" I have hear of that would need the same skill set as teachers. Heard of a site, indeed.com, and there is a link for "similar jobs" that would present simliar jobs to teaching. Best of luck to you.

I am right there along with you, except add a year. I am actually returning to my old school as a permanent sub/leave replacement, but I have to start looking elsewhere because we have a baby and this is just not going to get us to the next step in our lives. I love teaching, but I also have to be realistic.

I've seen jobs pop up on The New Teacher Project and Teach for America that look interesting. Someone I worked with is now working training people in educational software. Go to indeed.com and just punch in some keywords. That's what I've been doing. Maybe it will give you some ideas. Good luck!

TA?

I still only have my initial certification. To move on to the next one, I need 3 years of teaching experience. Oddly enough, subbing counts but being a TA does not. However, I also heard one year has to be mentored which I don't get doing either. So I really feel stuck.

If I didn't have to move out of state alone (i.e., my mom came so she wasn't alone in NY or my BF came), I would consider moving out of state. That also costs many, though, which I don't really have since saving is hard.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I was having a bad night the other night and just frustrated.

You can apply for an certificate extension or reissue if you don't meet your requirements before expiration. I honestly wouldn't worry about your licensure at this point. If there's a TA position that will be a good fit for you in terms of the TA's responsibilities and the benefits, I would go for it...

I am sorry you are in this situation. I hope things turn around for you.

I also say TA! You just have to find the right one. I was a TA in Island Park and they had us listed as Perm. Subs so our time there DID count. We were mentored as well. I got benefits and pretty decent salary (for TA) at the time I started at 36,000. We were also able to apply for after school programs, assistant coaching, clubs, to make extra money. I use to do the homework club after school.

TAs are more likely to be hired as LRs in my district than permanent subs
