Asperger's - age at diagnosis?

We are in the midst of having my son evaluated by CPSE. We took him to a clinical psychologist at Little Village who said that she thinks he has Asperger's, but that he is too young to officially diagnose (he turned 3 in October).

If your child has Asperger's, when was he or she diagnosed? And if you don't mind sharing, what services were you offered?

Thanks so much.

My nephew is Asperger's. He wasn't diagnosed until kindergarten. I could be wrong, but I believe that standard age for that diagnosis is 5-7 years old.

Re: Asperger's - age at diagnosis?

i have a few friends who have Aspie kids... they were all DXed at 5 or 6.

a true DX should not be given until at a child is at least 5.

the few that i do know with aspie kids, said they only noticed a few things different about their kids that stood out.

lack of social skills, but they still had some, they were super duper smart, just an ex. one friend DC was reading 4th grade level at 3 years old and understood what what they were reading...

I had my DD evaluated around her 7th Birthday at The Cody Center in Stony Brook.
Maybe you can give them a call and ask what age can they give a definitive diagnosis. Chat Icon

From my reading, 5 or 6 seems to be the earliest age Asperger's is generally diagnosed.

Right now DS is PDD-NOS, but I've been reading about Aspergers and finding a lot of information that is useful to me (mainly since there isn't a whole lot about PDD-NOS beyond the basics). He may not have it, but it's definitely something I want to keep in mind as he gets older.
