If your family lights an Advent wreath at home
do you also make time for Advent activities, or just the daily prayer?
We have a couple of activity workbooks, but we'll have to squeeze them in amongst dinner, homework and after-school activities. I wonder if they are going to treat it like additional homework and not really get anything out of it.
Just wondering how other families handle it. Thanks!

Can you explain the advent wreath to me? I never had it growing up, but remember it at church - it does sound like a nice tradition
maybe just skip the workbooks- or just try it and see what they think?

Re: If your family lights an Advent wreath at home
We dont do specific Advent activities but we work on DS Cub Scout Religious Medal. I think the Girs Scouts have something similar.
We go through his workbook and do a section or two a week. It's not an every night thing. Part of the requirement is community service within your church so there is a nice direct tie in to your parish. Last year DS really enjoyed it. I hope he feels the same way this year.

It's a 4 week religious countdown to Christmas, starting today. This week we light the first purple candle each night, and we have a book of prayers that has a different prayer and reflection for each night.
Next week we light 2 purple candles, the following week 2 purple & 1 rose, and then the last week 3 purple & 1 rose.
Week 1's purple candle symbolizes Hope Week 2's purple candle represents Peace Week 3's rose candle represents Joy (also the Solemnity of Mary) Week 4's candle represents Love
Some advent wreaths also have a white candle in the middle, that's lit on Christmas Day in honor of the Christ child.
Fran - there is a GS religious award, but our troop doesn't do it. We have some girls whose families don't belong to any religious organization, so we decided not to do it since we didn't want any of the girls to feel left out.

Re: If your family lights an Advent wreath at home
I make my advent wreath out of construction paper, complete with yellow flames
I follow these books for myself, my church sells them but I have also bought them on my own:

It is just six minutes a day. DD is just a baby, I read it out loud to her just so that I am involving her but hopefully she will be able to participate when she is older as well!

Thanks so much- it's all coming back to me now that you explain it...and what a nice way to bring the meaning back to christmas (as opposed to my candy advent calendar)
Thanks again- I'm def doing it heading out to the christian store in Pt Jeff this afternoon- now we're a day late! Beth
