Well believe it or not I just went to a meeting today and my principal said in 4 years the state wants our kids to take the ELA online. We want to know how! That means we would need enough computers or laptops for all students who need to take it (over 100) bc they all take it at once. We don't have the money for that either. I don't know why they bought it. I can see it saving money bc you can put tons of books on them and change them out etc? The worlds a changing. I'm just not sure I like it.
I heard about this too. Aside from not having enough $ for every student to have a computer to sit at during the test, teachers would need a new strategy to help kids prepare. They would not be able to write anything they want in the margins, cross anything out, circle, underline, etc. For open responses and essays they would need to know how to type fast!

I agree with PP - it's probably a grant.
But I think it's foolish for us to force kids to learn the way we did, last century. The world is completely different and is constantly changing (Moore's law - computing power doubles every 18 months). They are digital natives, we are digital immigrants.
I completely and wholeheartedly agree. The world is heading in a direction that it wasn't when we were children and the future generations are going to be learning in much different ways. It doesn't make it wrong, just different.

Yes, we spoke about that too! A lot of adults even still like to write out important papers before typing them. Children will be going straight from brain to computer. A different kind of learning. I can just say from my experience. I learned by taking notes. The actual writing process helped me soo much that when I would study I would write things again and again. I can imagine soon theyll be taking notes on laptops too.

I am a reading teacher and in my district we have spoken about the likelihood of the state doing away with the written portion of the test. I think having the test solely on computer will lead us to multiple choice responses alone. Either way...it's terrible!
