Is the an excess in the school's budget? If so, who cares how they spend it?

We have and ipad and my 4.5 year old DC can read and I do feel that the apps on our ipad reinforces what he learns at school.

Re: Schools paying for i pads for kindergarteners to read

I've heard about this for high schools, but not K. According to the schools, it's actually cheaper getting ipads than books, since it's only 1 ipad vs a dozen books or so.

I haven't seen the numbers, so I don't know how true it is, but that's what was in the articles.

every student had their own. The cost was $250,000. Seems like the money could be used for perhaps others who need more to help them succeed at reading and other academics.

How about learning to read the old fashioned way? It's work for how many years? Wasteful!

Do schools these days really have an excess in their budget?

Re: Schools paying for i pads for kindergarteners to read

http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/Valley-school-district-plan-gives-students-iPad-2225266.php

A Rio Grande Valley school district plans to equip every one of its students with an Apple iPad, rolling ahead with a digitally enhanced curriculum effort that's among the largest of its type in the nation.
The school board last month approved the first phase of the project, a $3.6 million purchase of more than 5,000 iPad 2's and 425 iPod Touch devices.

Within a year's time, the district plans to take things districtwide, spending millions on devices that may well become each student's own internet research library, project manager, and academic navigator.

The district has about 25,000 students. To equip each with an iPad will cost about $20.5 million, officials said. The district will purchase the devices, but said they will also pursue grants and donations to help pay for them.

And he said it may not be long before the devices pay for themselves with savings from online, versus paper, textbooks.

I was just complaining about this to my mom. It reminds me of schools in Half Hollow Hills that were built in the 60s into 70s w. no walls or doors and open into an atrium...completely jumping two feet into the percieved future w. no forethought

Many parents say they want their children to be surrounded by print books, and to experience turning physical pages as they learn about shapes, colors and animals...

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/21/business/for-their-children-many-e-book-readers-insist-on-paper.html

and how does the school know they are reading and not playing angry birds or facebook?

I'm pretty sure the schools aren't handing the kids iPads and saying "Good luck teaching yourself to read!" It's being used as a supplement to the "old fashioned" way.

I'm sure they aren't either, but it's still wasteful spending IMO.

Every article that I've been reading has been saying that every school using iPads is saving money in the long run (less books to buy, grants/funds from programs and companies, up-to-date books, etc). How is saving money wasteful?

It's one thing if they aren't spending their own money. I don't believe an $800 ipad, or however much they cost, is cheaper than reading books for students.

Electronic devices should never replace physical books IMO.

I would be pretty bothered if they used an iPad to replace books in my child's school.

Not knowing what they are being used for, I cringe a little thinking about how easily a kindergartener can damage them.

Or at least how quickly I think my kindergartener would damage it. Chat Icon

I agree with PP - it's probably a grant.

But I think it's foolish for us to force kids to learn the way we did, last century. The world is completely different and is constantly changing (Moore's law - computing power doubles every 18 months). They are digital natives, we are digital immigrants.

thats exactly what my husband said when i mentioned this to him!

Does anyone remember a few years ago when everyone you passed on the subway had an ipod shuffle and headphones in their ears? Where is that now? Where will the ipad be in a few years?

While I am sure that ipads could be a motivational tool for some kindergarteners...

There are so many behaviors that Kindergarteners need to learn about real hold-em-in-your-hand books that they will NOT be taught if using an ipad...

Such as ....

holding the book the right way
caring for books
turning pages left to right
finger tracking (some programs might highlight the next word for them)

I am sure there are many more skills that I'm not thinking of off of the top of my head...

I just think K is way too early to have these kids working on ipads. Maybe a few years later on...and certainly not replacing real books. There is nothing like learning to love to curl up with a REAL book!

Re: Schools paying for i pads for kindergarteners to read

I can't believe our district lost 10 tenured teachers last year due to budget cuts and it seems we will be losing another 10-20 this year because of the state tax cap blah blah whatever it's called and there is money out there to buy iPads for Kindergartners. It makes no sense to me.

ps, I still can't find a job because guidance counselors are the first department to get cuts.

Our priorities are azz backwards.

Don't get me wrong, if everything were normal in our economy and people's jobs weren't being threatened every year and there was a surplus in the budget, then sure, why not. But under our current circumstances....total waste of funds!

Its more than likely a grant and believe it or not, IPads cost less than books.

Our PTO paid for an iPad cart for each grade level. There are some wonderful apps to help assist in the reading process. I personally am for it. It is probably a grant or fun from the IT department. Being on the PTO I understand the where the monies come from now.

Re: Schools paying for i pads for kindergarteners to read

i think it is fantastic... my 4 year old will have his own (his christmas gift).

e-books, etc are our future. most books do not sell as well as e-books (which is why so many book stores are closing)

it will also take the load off of children having to lug, 10-15 text books home everyday from school.

i guess it will also depend on your child. AJ got an iPod when he was 2, my DD who is 2 also has her own iPod. she uses my iPad & my computer now, and is a pro at it.

it is actually a really fun way for kids to learn.

both my kids still have a hours and hours of fun with imaginary play, but our future is electronics...

think about when we went to college. text books, note books, paper and pen.

now its almost unseen on a college campus to have a notebook pen, paper and a ton of text books.

I agree. While I originally wanted to post something like "WHAT? Cant they use regular books?" I stopped and thought about how much more technology exists now than when I was in school.

Not only will these things help our children to learn to read, but using them will help them to adapt to technology as well.

We have regular books in our house, and my daughter also gets ebooks on her leappad.

Well believe it or not I just went to a meeting today and my principal said in 4 years the state wants our kids to take the ELA online. We want to know how! That means we would need enough computers or laptops for all students who need to take it (over 100) bc they all take it at once. We don't have the money for that either. I don't know why they bought it. I can see it saving money bc you can put tons of books on them and change them out etc? The worlds a changing. I'm just not sure I like it.
