Gifts for teachers

My DS is in kindergarten. I have no idea how much/ what to give for the holidays. He has a teacher and 4 assistants in the room. Initially I was thinking $50 for his teacher and $25 for the assistants, but DH feels that's too much to spend right now. Now I'm thinking of getting all of them Vera Bradley lunch bags (on sale for $14.99-16.99) and also giving the teacher a $25 gift card in hers. Is that good? Or would you maybe prefer a gift certificate for a manicure?

Re: Gifts for teachers

I'm personally a fan of gift cards. I'm not picky as to where they are for, but I find those are the gifts I really use. I love getting a new lunchbag, but my co-teacher doesn't and never uses them (we are usually given one each year). I think $50 is VERY generous and think that $25 would be fine. I am giving my own kids' teachers $25 each this year and I give the assistants the same, since I find they really do a lot of work for what they get paid.

Re: Gifts for teachers

$50 is VERY generous, and i would be uncomfortable accepting a gift of that value to be honest.

$15-25 is the average range of gift cards i have received in the last ten or so years.

Re: Gifts for teachers

I work in Queens and I really do not get gifts or good gifts from thekids/parents. I would be more than happy with a teacher ornament (and if you wanted to give more than just that attach a $10 target gift card)
I dont like giving DD or startbucks giftcards because I or my DH get them all the time and we dont drink coffee.

Wow this is good to know. I am not in NY and I was thinking of giving my DD's teacher $50. She works SO hard and teachers get paid crap out here but I would hate to make her feel uncomfortable.

Re: Gifts for teachers

I think that is SUPER generous. THe most I have ever gotten from a child is $25 gift card in a big Lands End beach bag....and I thought that was beyond generous. I plan on doing $25 gc for DS's teacher and about $10 each for assistants. I think $25 is VERY generous!

Re: Gifts for teachers

I think that's a great gift and SO beyond generous!! The problem with a gift certificate for a mani is the teacher may not live in the area.. etc.. I know for myself, I have a place I'm pretty loyal to.

I think that gift is really thoughtful, generous, and useful!!

Re: Gifts for teachers

I was thinking $50 GC too - one for the teacher and one for the assistant. I really think I want to give them both the same....is that okay or would the teacher be miffed if I didn't give her more than her assistant?
