Runners: How do you keep you hunger under control?
As I increase my mileage my appetite is increasing. I feel the most ravenous on my long run days. I am so proud of myself for running so far YET I usually am not far from eating the house of all of its contents that day. I am a very healthy eater everyday.I never eat before my 530am run (have coffee and go because if I do then I get cramps) but eat right after. I consume whole grains, tons of vegetables, lean protein, fruits, healthy fat and atleast 2.5l liters of water a day. I know that I do not lack in that department but I guess I need to figure out the right combination for me. Any tips or information is appreciated to tame the hungry beast that is within. Thank you!

I don't know if there's any way to really control that. Same thing happens to me, the more I run, the more I want to eat. If you're not gaining weight I think it's ok to eat a lot of nutritious foods if you work out a lot.

I too am starving the harder I work out. I try to listen to my body, slow down, and make sure I am truly hungry. Little snacks help too.

Are you using nutrition during your runs too? I have walked away from long runs feeling pretty okay if I use GU or sport beans. Other than that, I always have a protein shake after my run to get some good calories.

Re: Runners: How do you keep you hunger under control?
The only thing I find that dampens my appetite is eating something heavier in my otherwise very healthy meal. For instance my protein in a meal always lean-chicken breast, tofu, 1% cottage cheeese, boiled eggs, or fish. I find if I have a piece of filet mignon, hamburger or a boiled kielbasa with whatever vegetables are on my plate, then I have a chance of taming the beast within for a bit longer. I feel like those foods sit heavy on my stomach, taking longer to digest so my stomach doesnt grumble as quick. I rarely eat meat so this is why my body reacts that way. At this point it is the only thing that works (sometimes)

I always eat much more on days I run. I wish I had more advice. I always try eating things that will keep me feeling full longer like lean protein and fiber.
